A Scout’s Take: St. John Bosco Summer League (Part 3)
A Scout’s Take: St. John Bosco Summer League (Part 3)
BELLFLOWER, CA—St. John Bosco High School was the place to be on Tuesday for one of the better summer leagues in So-Cal. There were few kids missing—most notably Jake Kyman and Max Agbonkpolo of Santa Margarita. However, this lets other players the opportunity to step even more—that being Shengzhe Li. Arguably the most dominant player we saw all night.
Productive Duo
JT Tan (Rolling Hills Prep)
2020, C, 6-foot-7, 230 pounds
Joel’s Take: Tan appears to have lost some weight and as a result his conditioning and allusiveness have improved. The hands and fundamental work have always been there, but now his 2nd jump has improved, especially in the areas of rebounding. He needs to work on finishing over length and through contact, but he knows what he is as a player.
Brandon Clay (Rolling Hills Prep)
2021, PF, 6-foot-6, 230 pounds
Joel’s Take: One of the more improved players from the regular season has been Clay. He has very long arms, soft hands, and nimble feet. He knows how to carve out space and he can finish with either hand. His passing out of the post was impressive as he handed out some nice assists when the double team arrived.
Son of a Coach
Nick Davison (Santa Margarita)
2021, PF, 6-foot-7, 200 pounds
Joel’s Take: Davison is still quite gawky, which is quite common with young bigs. He struggled to finish in traffic at times, but the improvement is coming. He stepped out and showed off a soft shooting touch and his length was impressive as he has improved as a rebounder. He plays with a good motor and his overall feel for the game is improved as well.
Division II 4-man
Allen McBride (Corona Centennial)
2019, PF, 6-foot-4, 190 pounds
Joel’s Take: Ideally McBride looks like a prototypical junior college 4-man. Strong, bouncy, and a hot motor describe this undersized post player. His skills are raw, but he can face-up and explode to the rim and he’s a quick jumper. Needs to expand his touch out to the elbow and tighten up his triple threat skills.
Biggest Surprise
Jalen Pitre (Gahr)
2021, WF, 6-foot-5, 180 pounds
Joel’s Take: One of the more intriguing prospects I saw was Pitre. The long and rangy 4/3 gives you an honest effort and he’s very athletic. He displayed active hands, quick feet, and a scorer’s mentality. The lefty is still quite raw, but the physical tools are evident.
