Prospect Update: Marcus Tsohonis (2019 Jefferson HS/Seattle Rotary)
The original plan was to rest. After all, it had been a very busy spring for Marcus Tsohonis. The versatile 6-foot-5, 175-pound guard from Jefferson High School had been traveling and playing on the EYBL Circuit with Seattle Rotary and helped the program achieve a prestigious Peach Jam berth. But when he saw that the Rose City Rebels could have used some help in the finals of the Rose City Showcase against the Northwest Panthers, Tsohonis decided to lace up his shoes with some of his old AAU teammates to help them to a thrilling victory.
“That was most definitely a win for Portland,” Tsohonis said. “Since I’m playing with (Seattle Rotary) I know most of those guys and so it felt really good to win that game. I’ve played with most of (the Rebels) all my life so I already knew spots where they were going, where I was going – there was a lot of communication between us.”
Tsohonis fit right in with his old friends from home. He played multiple roles on the floor, whether it was taking the ball to the basket and drawing fouls, setting up teammates for open threes, or getting down and dirty helping out on the boards. This was all coming off of a successful spring with Seattle Rotary, one in which he averaged 12.9 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 2.6 assists and earned All-EYBL Breakout Team honors the very first session in Dallas.
“Most definitely I loved it,” Tsohonis said. “I felt like I played good even though I’ve had a couple of injuries – I’m coming off a broken finger and a messed up ankle – but I thought I played pretty well.
Playing on the EYBL – and on a team going to the Peach Jam – has given Tsohonis the opportunity to play in front of many college coaches across the country. While he did not name specific schools, Tsohonis noted that he’s been in contact with coaches from the Pac-12 and Big Sky. Previously it’s been reported that he holds offers from Portland, Montana, Pacific, and Southern Cal. He’s hoping for more to come in July.
“I think some more offers are going to come through at the end of the summer,” Tsohonis said. “Right now I’m just looking and see what falls out at the end of the summer. Then I can pick and choose a Top Ten, Top Five, whatever. I just want to come in as a freshman and play.”
Tsohonis will get a chance to impress schools on what is arguably the most prestigious tournament of the summer – the Peach Jam. “This is my first-time ever going to Peach Jam – I’ve played three years in the EYBL so to reach the Peach Jam in July is going to be an experience with all those coaches there,” Tsohonis said. “I want to win so that’s one of the biggest goals I’ve set at the beginning of the year. I want to finish strong.”
The current state 6A player of the year, Tsohonis currently ranks as the #1 ranked player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2019 rankings.
