Prospect Spotlight: Christian Winborne (2022)
It’s not very often that you will see coverage of players on our site who aren’t in high school yet. But with the overflow of freshman talent last season in the Baltimore area, it was only right for us to get out on the scene and see what we have to look forward to for the 2018-19 season. There will be no shortage of talent in the upcoming freshman class for next season either.
One player that will be one to watch is guard Christian Winborne. Winborne will play for Gilman in the MIAA A Conference and is poised to contribute right off the bat.
The 6-foot guard played for Gilman’s middle school team this past season and helped lead them to a 7-1 overall record.
“I improved most on my shooting last season,” Winborne told Prep Hoops. “I was always a little inconsistent with my shot, but after spending a lot of time in the gym it has come around.”
Currently, Winborne is playing with Team Thrill’s 15U team, who is considered as one of the top teams in the country. In recent tournaments, they’ve played up in the 16U age bracket and have had some strong showings.
“Playing up has helped me and my whole team get a little bit more stronger, physical and faster too,” Winborne explained. “It’s just helped as a whole overall.”
Playing in the MIAA A Conference can be a rude awakening for most freshman. There will be some expected growing pains, but with Winborne’s ability, he shouldn’t have an issue finding ways to impact the game.
“I’m just focused on building relationships with my teammates right now,” Winborne said. “I want us to have a winning season, have everyone play together as a team and make sure I’m taking smart shots.”
Winborne has already established a relationship with Gilman’s star point guard in Jalen Rucker (2019). The two have known each other for four years now. Rucker could play a huge role in getting Winborne adjusted to the speed and style of play and could be an overall mentor for the incoming freshman.
When asked to describe his own game, Winborne has this to say:
“I’m a real scrappy player on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball. I just want to win and be someone who can help their teammates become better players while doing so.”
