Prospect Spotlight: Deng Mayar (2020)
With a big spring and summer ahead, Deng Mayar is hoping to he can showcase his athletic and versatile style of play, and maybe have some recruitment heading in to his junior season next year.
The 6-foot-3 Judge Memorial wing is bigger for a guard, and he says that, paired with his fiery style of play, make him something of a menace on the floor.
“I’m a big guard, so I can work inside, and I’m a stretch-four sometimes. I like being a leader out there. And all my coaches think I’m a leader, too. I like to talk and communicate on defense a lot,” said Mayar.
He played both JV and varsity this past season as a sophomore with the Bulldogs. And had major roles with both teams.
“On the varsity, my main role was to be the fiercest player, because coach wanted me to play the four. So I would get rebounds and putbacks, and guard the best player on the other team.”
Now, he’s headed into an important spring and summer with UBC 16U. It’s his first year playing grassroots ball in three seasons, the last two summers he’s been dealing with injuries.
“I’m excited for my team and I’m excited for myself and the summer ahead. My first tourney in Cali we went 4-0 and we all played really well and had really good team chemistry,” said Mayar.
“I’m really trying to get my name out there and get coaches looking at me. That’s why I made a Twitter (account), so I could reach out to coaches, and send my tapes,”
His recruitment is slow right now, but there’s still a ways to go for the up-and-coming sophomore.
“It’s (recruitment) kind of slow right now, but I’m hoping it picks up by my junior year,” Mayar said.
