Saturday Takeaways: DMVelite Live Warmup
BOWIE, MD — DMVelite brought together a strong field of teams for the this year, and Prep Hoops was in the gym for a full day of hoops. Here we recap Saturday’s action with five takeaways.
BALANCED WE R1 TEAM GOES 2-0
Led by 2019 standouts Isaiah Wong and Eric Dixon, We R1 comfortably defeated 6th Man Warriors and New World respectively, and finished out the day with an unblemished record. 2019 point guard Alexander Rice and 2019 post Qudus Wahab each had some very nice moments as well. 2019 Justin Paz knocked down several jump shots from the perimeter and proved to be a consistent threat in that department.
JAHMAL BANKS EMERGES
In 6th Man’s win over 16U Team Melo, 2020 Jahmal Banks went off for 27 points. The versatile 6-foot-5 guard gave commendable effort on both ends of the court and defended very well. Banks is really starting to emerge as one of the top sophomores in the area and despite his high major football recruitment there is little doubt to his status as a division one basketball prospect.
IKE CORNISH STANDS OUT
2021 Ike Cornish made the game look really easy for Team Melo 15’s on Saturday. He has a good blend of size and skill. Cornish is tracking among the top local prospects in his class.
MELO EYBL GOES 2-0
RJ Blakney and Jay Heath stood out for Team Melo, who recorded two convincing wins on Saturday. 2019 Jalen Rucker is a player to watch this spring. He is a reliable point guard who continues to work hard and produce on both ends of the court.
QUICK HITS
- 2019 Karim Coulibaly mentioned Rutgers and West Virginia among several high major schools recruiting him hardest at the moment. The 6-foot-9 post prospect, who is a native of Mali, was a standout for New World in their matchup vs. We R1. Coulibaly says he doesn’t anticipate a decision any time soon.
- 2019 Jason Gibson stood out for 6th man warriors with his fundamentals and toughness. The skilled point guard demonstrated the ability to score, but also played smart defense.
- 2019 Gilbert Otoo has now been dubbed “the mid-range king.” Good luck finding a better shooter from 15 feet in the dmv. And at 6-foot-5, he has the size to shoot over top of most defenders.
