Division 1 Schools Tracking Canady
A riser in the class of 2019, Racine (Wis.) Park combo guard Larry Canady has developed into one of the best two-way players in the state. Not only one of the most improved players in Wisconsin, Canady played for one of the most improved teams. Helping turn around a 9-11 Panther squad from a year ago, Canady led Park to a 21-5 overall record this past season, including a trip to the sectional finals.
“I feel like we’ve gotten over that hump,” Canady told Prep Hoops Wisconsin. “We had some adversity and chemistry messed up (last season). I feel like we grew and got better each and every day. Going into next year, I think we have a lot of potential.”
Reaching the 1,000-point plateau, Canady averaged 17.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game as a junior. Every night, the 6-foot-2 guard was also responsible for slowing down the opposition’s best perimeter player.
Canady averaged 17.0 ppg as a junior.“I’ve been guarding the best player on every team since 3rd or 4th grade,” he said. “That’s nothing new to me. Defense is one of my main priorities — locking down my man.”
Heading into the travel season, North Dakota State, UW-Milwaukee, Butler, Georgia Tech, Santa Clara, UW-Green Bay, UNLV, and Chicago State are all expressing interest. Canady named Butler, Green Bay, and Milwaukee as the three schools currently pushing the hardest.
Butler: “They contact me 1-2 times a week. They tell me to stay hungry, keep my grades up, and stay humble.”
Green Bay: “They were telling me how much they like me. They like my style of play and think I’d be a great fit for their team.”
Milwaukee: “They’ve been talking to my coaches. When I have talked to them, it’s been just keep my grades up and I can go wherever I want.”
Canady will run with the Wisconsin Playground Warriors during the travel season. Before the scholarship offers come his way, schools want to see a few minor improvements from Canady.
“They want to see my handle get better,” said Canady. “They want me to add a little weight and get stronger.”
