Prospect Spotlight: Vaughn Flowers (2020)
Rolling Hills Prep guard Vaughn Flowers isn’t exactly known for his shooting prowess just yet.
But if the first time you saw him was a couple weeks back at Nike Extravaganza, you’d think he was one of the top perimeter shooters in the area.
Flowers, a 6-foot-1 sophomore known mostly for his defensive prowess, broke out at Mater Dei’s top-notch event, scoring 24 points with a handful of 3-pointers in the Huskies win over Corona del Mar.
Flowers said that opponents have been daring him to beat them from the perimeter, so that’s exactly what he’s doing.
Rolling Hills Prep sophomore guard Vaughn Flowers is having a breakout season.“I’ve been taking advantage of people leaving me open,” he told Prep Hoops So-Cal. “If I’m making them, I’ll keep shooting them.”
Flowers added that in addition to working on his shooting mechanics, he’s been putting in the time to become a more consistent threat from beyond-the-arc.
“I need to keep playing like this,” he said. “I’m good defensively, but I need to keep taking my open shots and making them and I’ll be good.”
Flowers said he’s shown more confidence toward the end of the season and into the playoffs due to the fact that his coach, Harvey Kitani, is urging him to take those open looks.
“Coach Kitani tells me to keep working on my shooting,” he said. “He tells me people are going to leave me open and to have the confidence to take those shots.”
Rolling Hills Prep is 19-6 on the season and the top-seed in the CIF Southern Section Division 4A playoffs. The Huskies take on Ontario High Tuesday night in the quarterfinals and Flowers knows exactly what’s been working well for the team this season.
“We’ve been playing good defense,” he said. “It helps us get out in transition and score. We’ve been really good defensively.”
