Big Week for Cobb Part 3
With last week’s games being rescheduled due to the snow and ice on the roads and with region tournament and state playoffs apporaching, there will be a bunch of important region games squeezed in over the next two weeks. Another big week for a couple of teams in Cobb this week. South Cobb, Pope, Sprayberry, Campbell, Pebblebrook, and Wheeler face big region and rivalry games this week. Check below.
South Cobb (11-6) @ Creekview (17-2) – Monday Jan. 22nd – 7:30pm
Due to the snow and ice last week, the Eagles of South Cobb have not played a game since their signature win over neighborhood rival Campbell, which they won 86-83 in OT on Saturday Jan. 13th. South Cobb is an overall 11-6 so far on the year. This is a Region 6 Class 6A matchup. Creekview is currently #2 in the region and South Cobb is sitting at #4. This will be the first meeting between the two this season. South Cobb’s pressure man to man defense has been giving opponents trouble this season and will look to do the same for Creekview star 2018 CG KJ Jenkins. KJ is one of the most underrated guards in the state of Georiga and is the main reason Creekview is where they are now.
Wheeler (13-8) @ Westlake (10-9) – Tuesday Jan. 23rd – 7:30pm
After coming off their lost to Christ School (NC) on Saturday at the Peachtree Corners Invitational, the Wheeler Wildcats will head on the road to Westlake. This is a Region 2 Class 7A matchup. 2018 C EJ Montgomery of Wheeler has just been named a 2018 McDonald’s All American for this season. This will be an important game for both squads as this can determine seeding for the region tournament. Westlake currently sits at #4 in the region and with Wheeler sitting at #2. Last time these two squads met it was a shootout. 2019 CG Chase Hunter of Westlake had a team high of 32 points but his team could not secure the victory as they fell 94-77. It is never easy playing Westlake on the road, so Wheeler will have to get over their lost they took over the weekend and focus for this one.
Pebblebrook (17-2) @ Campbell (15-5) – Tuesday Jan. 23rd – 7:30pm
Another big Region 2 Class 7A matchup will be in progress on Tuesday night with Pebblebrook, who is #1 in the region, up against Campbell, who is #3 in the region. These two last met back on December 20th where it took Pebblebrook overtime to come out with the victory over Campbell 83-81. The Falcons of Pebblebrook are currently riding a 15 game winning streak and have not lost in about two months. Pebblebrook has not played since MLK Day where they defeated Berkamr in overtime 76-73 at the MLK Showcase at Douglas County. The Spartans are coming off their big win on the road against Westlake 64-58 this past weekend. Campbell has won 9 of their last 10 games. This one should be another high scoring affair and the atmosphere should be looking good as well.
Creekview (17-2) @ Sprayberry (12-5) – Friday Jan. 26th – 7:30pm
The Creekview Grizzles will be headed to Sprayberry High School this Friday with a Region 6 Class 6A matchup. Sprayberry currently sits at #3 in the region. Yellow Jackets have had a good second half of the season and winning 9 of their last 10 games. That only lost in that span came to Creekview where they were defeated by 10 on the road. This will be a battle of region player of the year between 2018 CG KJ Jenkins and 2018 WG Khadim Samb (Idaho). Sprayberry will face Osborne Tuesday night before their encounter with Creekview later in the week.
Pope (13-5) @ Sprayberry (12-5) – Saturday Jan. 27th – 5:30pm
Back to back big home games for Sprayberry this week as you can see. Sprayberry, after their matchup with region rival Creekview, will have to turn around and face neighborhood rival Pope. Pope has won 7 of their last 8 games and will have two region matchups before they face Sprayberry Saturday night. The Greyhounds came out with the win earlier in the season 68-61. This should be a good matchup of a couple of underrated wings with 2018 WG Jackson Baylark of Pope and 2018 WG Khadim Samb (Idaho) of Sprayberry. I would also keep my eye one two guards from both squads and coincidentally their both named Micah. 2018 CG Micah McCuen of Sprayberry has had a great senior season and is a tremondous rebounder for a guard. 2019 SG Micah Paulk of Pope is one of Cobb’s top shooters, maybe the state. Paulk is threat from deep and can get his shot off the dribble.
Creekview (17-2) @ South Cobb (11-6) – Saturday Jan. 27th – 7:30pm
Talk about a tough week for Creekview, at Sprayberry and face South Cobb twice in one week. South Cobb and Creekview will meet again on Saturday night after the two face Monday night at Creekview. South Cobb High School is not a place I would want to play on a Satuday night, especially a big game like this one. It will be very interesting to see how 2018 CG KJ Jenkins of Creekview will handle this road test. The matchups these two have this week can really determine seeding for the Region 6 Class 6A tournament coming up in a few weeks.
