Five Takeaways: Owasso vs Muskogee
Muskogee came into tonight’s matchup with the Owasso Rams with something to prove. After a tough start to the season, the Roughers have rebounded well and knocked off a top- 10 team in Bishop Kelley. The Rams came into the game on somewhat of a roll as well. They have won six straight coming into Muskogee and will hope to knock off a talented Muskogee team.
- Strong Start
Muskogee started the game strong against Owasso. They came to play jumping out to a 10-0 lead and led by as much as 17. Muskogee moved the ball well and found the open shot with a good team effort. CJ Parks and Brooks Haddock led the Roughers in this period of good play and Owasso couldn’t figure out how to stop them in the first half. The Rams figured out how to slow them down in the second half after they keyed on Haddock.
- In the Gym Range
Brooks Haddock proved he can shoot from anywhere on his side of the court. He was on fire for the Roughers in the first half and shot lights out. He created separation when guarded tightly by the Rams and still had the ability to knock down the tough shots. In the first half they could not stop Haddock. When he got the ball he scored. Haddock was the best shooter in the gym and showed it scoring 18 points with three 3’s with one coming from the Muskogee logo at mid-court. Muskogee will lean on Haddock to continue to shoot the ball as well as he has thus far in the season.
- Chipping Away
Owasso started to chip away late in the second quarter at the Roughers lead. They trailed by as much as 17 and went into the half trailing by only 9. After the half Owasso kept just chipping away. They held the Roughers to 6 points in the third quarter and tied the game at 43. During this stretch they were led by good play from 2019 Guard Hayden Peterson and 2019 Guard Seth Pomeroy. Pomeroy led the charge from deep hitting four 3-pointers throughout the game. Pomeroy finished with 18 points on the night.
- Defense
Both teams played stellar defense at different points throughout the night. Muskogee started the game only giving up nine points in the first quarter playing tight in your face defense. Then Owasso got themselves back in the game by limiting Muskogee’s third quarter to 6 points after they had started so strong. Muskogee played a switch every screen defense and it worked until Owasso started using the switching to get mismatches. Owasso played a defense that keyed on Brooks Haddock and tried to limit him and his shooting throughout the night.
- Hayden Peterson 2019 Owasso Guard
Owasso struggled in the first half and it was Peterson who kept them in the game. Peterson got the tough baskets for Owasso on the night. He got to the rim and finished well. Peterson led the charge back from 17 down for Owasso. He had a game-high 19 points and hit the game-clinching free-throws for the Rams. If Peterson can keep performing at a high level, the rams will be able to continue on their winning streak. The Rams are on a 7 game winning streak and earned their win against Muskogee.
