Prospect Spotlight: Matt Jones (2019)
There’s no glitz or glamour following the game of Tesoro High point guard Matt Jones and that’s exactly the way he wants it.
The 5-foot-10 junior has led the Titans to a solid 10-4 start with his main focus being on simply winning as many games as possible.
“I’m just trying to keep us going forward,” Jones told Prep Hoops So-Cal after a win over Los Alamitos at the North/South OC Challenge. “I make sure to keep control of the offense and make open shots when I get them.”
Jones brings a nice mix of high basketball IQ, toughness and unselfish play to a Tesoro team that is loaded with offensive options both inside and out.
Tesoro PG Matt Jones does a great job of getting the basketball to his skilled big men.But when he’s not setting up his big man Noah Honetschlager or his twin wings Tristan and Tyler Broughton, Jones turns on his attack mode mentality and gets downhill toward the basket.
“I’m at my best when I’m getting into the paint and creating and shooting from the perimeter,” he said. “I really need to work on knocking down my 3-pointers more consistently.”
Four of Tesoro’s starters are juniors and many of the key bench players are sophomores, which bodes will for the Titans this year and in the future.
Jones believes that Tesoro has a good chance to make a deep run in the CIF Southern Section Division 2A playoffs, but there is something the Titans need to clean up in league play before the postseason begins.
“We need to pick up our defense,” he said. “We need to work the gaps and not allow any driving lanes. We’re really young and like playing together. I think we have a bright future together.”
Jones, who plays his club basketball with CABC, reported a 3.5 grade point average and no serious college interest at this point.
