Prospect Spotlight: Brock Gilbert (2018)
Currently checking in as Utah’s 48th-ranked 2018, 5-foot-9 point guard Brock Gilbert is one of the state’s underrated floor generals, and could be a good small school get.
He’s posting some nice numbers so far this season for Syracuse, and credits his court savvy and awareness for the success.
“My strengths are that I have a really high basketball IQ. I have very good court vision, that helps with passing. I can shoot NBA range 3s, it doesn’t really matter how deep it is. I’m a good rebounder for my size, and I can defend and get steals,” said Gilbert.
“Obviously, I need to get in the weight-room more and get bigger. And I need to work on my mid-range and creating my shot. And I need to get a little bit better at reading pick-and-rolls.”
With the Titans, the senior leader has been taking on a role as the go-to scorer and playmaker, and he’s acclimated well to the new alpha role.
“I’ve been playing well. I’m putting up like 20 points, seven rebounds, seven assists. It’s been different this year because in past years we’ve had guys that could really score at will,” said Gilbert. “This year, we have a really good team, but I’ve had to step up and shoot some shots I normally wouldn’t — and they’ve been going in so far, so it’s been good.”
As for his recruitment, it’s been slow, but he’s planning on taking a proactive approach to getting noticed, when his senior season is complete.
“Not really anything yet for recruitment, I’m just kind of waiting to see what happens after senior season,” he said. “I think I’m good enough to go play (in college), and after senior year I’ll get some film out and stuff like that.”
