Five Takeaway: Victory Christian vs Holland Hall
The game was a special one from the start. It was a toy drive night at Victory Christian, so after they scored their first basket the court was flooded with toys thrown by the fans. After that cool experience however, Victory struggled to find their offensive game. Holland Hall held them to 6 points in the first half and played great defense throughout. Holland Hall went on to win the game 43-38 over the Conquerors.
- Defense Wins Championships
Holland Hall played tough defense throughout the game. They smothered the Victory Christian team and forced them into taking bad shots or contested shots. In both periods of the first half, Holland Hall held Victory Christian to three points. Throughout the entire game Holland Hall held Victory Christian to 38 points If Holland Hall can play the kind of defense that they played against the Conquerors they will be tough to beat.
- Brock Goes and Gets the Rock
Throughout the night, Brock Davis 2020 Holland Hall Forward, was dominant on the inside. He had a good game on the boards pulling down rebound after rebound. On the defensive side of the ball, Brock was forcing Victory to shoot the ball from the outside because of his length and presence on the inside. Davis is still a little raw offensively, but tied his team’s game high of 12 points. Davis is an athlete showed a lot of potential on the court and definitely had the play of the game as he brought down the house with a dunk in the third quarter while Victory Christian were on a run.
- Who is Mason Lee?
Mason Lee 2019 Holland Hall Guard was the best shooter on the night for either team. Both teams struggled offensively from the floor but if Mason Lee was left open he hit the shot. Lee showed composure throughout the night, finding ways to keep getting open and he hit his free throws down the stretch in the fourth quarter to seal the victory. Lee will be an interesting player to keep an eye on throughout the year as he could break out for some big games for Holland Hall. Lee finished the night with 12 points.
- Senior Leadership
Bryce McConnell 2018 Holland Hall Guard was big down the stretch for Holland Hall. When Victory Christian looked like they were about to take the game over, McConnell hit some big shots. He showed an ability to keep calm under the pressure of the Victory Christian crowd. McConnell also got his teammates involved with good vision and the ability to hit the pass. Holland Hall will be a tough team to beat if McConnell steps up in the way he did tonight.
- Victory’s Struggles
Victory Christian struggled on the night to find their shot. They were held to six points in the first half and even though they went on a run in the second half; they still continued to struggle with their shot. Ryan Pittman 2018 Victory Christian Guard was solid in the second half for the conquerors. He was the leading scorer in the game with 13 points, with all 13 points coming the second half. On a bright side for Victory Christian one of their key players was out injured. Caleb Calhoon 2018 Victory Chritstian Guard is not expected back until mid-January from a football injury. When Calhoun is back, the highly ranked Conquerors will be even more dangerous than before.
