Five Takeaways: Sand Springs
In the nightcap of day one of the Tulsa Memorial Invitational Sand Springs took the Wichita Defenders. Sand Springs started the game strong and jumped out to a 15-point lead at the end of the first quarter. The Sandites had control of the game from then on out. They played tough defense against Wichita and played unselfishly. The Sandites won the game 83-48 over the Defenders.
- Savage struggles with shot but finds ways to contribute
Sand Springs has talent to compete in Class 6A. They spread the ball out and scored well in a night that Colt Savage 2018 Combo Guard did not play his best game. Savage played strong and aggressive against the Defenders and finished the game with 13 pts, but struggled to find his shot in the game. Savage showed that even on a bad shooting night he can help his team in others ways. He got his teammates involved and rebounded the ball well.
- A Legitimate Contender
Before the season started, no one outside of Sand Springs thought they could be a legitimate contender in Class 6A. In there early season games, they have proved that they can compete with anybody in Class 6A. In their game against Union, they played some of the toughest defense. Against the defenders they proved that it was not a fluke, they held them to 10 points in the first quarter and held them to 48 points throughout the game. If the Sandites can continue to play stifling defense, they have the chance to play late into March.
- Unselfish Play
Sand Springs played unselfishly throughout the night against the Defenders. They spaced the court well and moved the ball. Many different players got in the scoring column for Sand Springs, They played suffocating defense and got easy shots in transition. When they were not in transition, they got into their offense and ran it well. The Sandites finished the game four players in double figures.
- He’s Foxy
Marlo Fox 2021 Sand Springs Guard showed his potential. He played big minutes for the Sandites against the Defenders. He played well throughout the night. He was smart with the ball and didn’t turn the ball over. He finished the night with five points and showed good form in his shot. He has a lot of potential and if he continues to develop for the Sandites throughout the season, he could see a lot of growth in his game.
- Stock Riser
Davon Richardson 2020 Sand Springs Guard had an impressive performance against the Defenders. Richardson got into foul trouble in the first half, which limited his playing time. In the second half, Richardson caught fire. He scored all of his game-high 15 points in the second half. He was strong in the paint and finished at the rim well. Richardson has played well this season when he hasn’t been in foul trouble. If he can stay out of foul trouble he will make Sand Springs that much more dangerous. Richardson continues to perform well and his stock is rising. He will be a player to keep an eye on throughout the season in Class 6A.
