2019 WNC Guards
The 2019 class in WNC is as good of a class as I have covered in my time being involved with North Carolina high school basketball. Here is a look at the top 2019 guards in WNC.
Jalen Lecque 6’3 2019 SG Christ School-Lecque is a nationally ranked 2019 prospect. He has the ability to dunk anything that is thrown near the rim. He is gifted athletically and had two run-down blocks that he pinned on the backboard near the top of the square. He is a above-average passer and has tremendous court-vision in his first open gym with Christ School. He sees passes a play or two ahead of anyone else. He is shifty with the ball in his hands and can play without the ball. He knocked down a few contested mid-range jumpers today. He is able to create so much space with his quickness and height by jumping so high on his jump-shots. He is improving defensively and getting better at reading ball screens and getting to spots.
Caleb MillsCaleb Mills 6’4 2019 G Asheville Christian Academy-Mills stands at 6-foot-4 and is a new-age point guard. College programs are going after the bigger point guards because the length has been hard to guard for smaller guards. Mills has the ability to see over smaller guards and can get his shot off easier. He is a streaky shooter from behind the arc and is a good finisher at the rim. Mills does a good job of attacking the paint and either scoring or making the right pass. He has a good handle and uses his long arms to deflect passes and get steals on the defensive end.
Raishaun Brown 6’0 2019 G Asheville Christian Academy-Brown is a solid combo guard at 6-foot. He can play the 1 or the 2. Hehas the ability to push the ball up the floor in transition or he can score from the perimeter. He has a good handle and can facilitate the offense. He has a strong build in his upper-body and does not get pushed around. Brown is able to get hot from beyond the three-point line like Mills and can rattle a number of baskets off in a row. He is a player with a high IQ and does not make many mistakes.
D’Angelo Elliott 6’3 2019 G Carolina Day-A young player that is getting better each day , spent some time on the JV squad perfecting his craft but is expected to make a major leap very soon. Has good size for a guard and understands how to pick his spots without stopping the flow of the game. He has very long arms that allow him to get into passing lanes and get deflections and steals.
Jake Smith (6’0, PG, 2019, Enka HS/Team SC)– Smith is a skilled point guard with a very high basketball IQ. Understands the game at a high level, has a great stroke, gets better every time I see him. Will be one of the best guards in the area this time next year.
Ben Craig (6’2 SG Owen HS/Team Carolina)– A high IQ guard that can take over a game with his scoring ability. Has a good pull-up jumper and understands where to put the basketball. He has a good frame and has a strong upper body. He can attack the lane and is a good passer.
Fletcher Abee 6’3 SG Freedom HS-Abee is one of the best shooters in this part of the state, he knows how to score the basketball without the ball or off the dribble. He does a good job of reading defenses and coming off of screens to get his shot off. He has been hearing recently from Western Carolina (offer), The Citadel, Richmond, and High Point.
