From Tuesday to Thursday, 17 teams did battle in a single-elimination style bracket to crown a national champion. A number of New York natives played well over the three days. Here’s a look at the NY Guard Standouts From The National Prep Championships:
The former Iona Prep wing still shoots it at a really high level, but has improved his wiggle off the bounce since arriving at Vermont Academy. A high academic player, Berete is an ideal fit for any high academic small colleges looking for a floor spacer.
Tillery continues to produce, averaging 19 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists a game as New Hampton advanced to the Semifinals before ultimately losing to champion Western Reserve. The lead guard can really shoot it from beyond the arc and is strong enough that he handles contact well.
The Brooklyn guard very much plays like he never actually left the city. A physical driver with good length and strength, Jeffrey is capable of getting to the rim and finishing through or over most defenders. He’s improved his decision making in a real way in his time at Mount Zion, and continues to improve as a shooter.
Kirksey had a game winning layup for OSL Prep vs South Kent and had a team high 23 in a hard fought loss to Massanutten. The New Jersey native was impressive during his time at Clark University.
It’s still early for the shooter from New York, but Wooten can really fill it up. He hit three threes in their semi-final game against Combine, which ended 76-70. The central NY native is still learning the finer points of the game, but with multiple years left at PSA, it’s hard not to be bullish about his upside.
