Pangos All-Frosh/Soph Camp: Many of West’s best on display
NORWALK, Ca. – A multitude of fellows who’ve already established themselves as Southern California-based high school standouts – and a bunch more who join that plateau shortly – were on display Saturday during the first day of the annual Pangos All-Frosh/Soph Camp at Cerritos College.
Among those in the former category were sophomores Jaylen Clark (Corona Centennial), Johnny Juzang (Studio City Harvard-Westlake) and Evan Mobley (Temecula Rancho Christian), each of which was superb for the Compton Magic club program this past spring and summer.
Another member of the Class of 2020 in that group is Josh Christopher (Lakewood Mayfair), he of the either-hand, high-flying dunks that were on display both Saturday and during the summer for the California Supreme program.
Each is not only among the best California has to offer in the class but a Top 20 – or better – caliber prospect nationally.
A sophomore who could evolve into one of the Southland’s better point guards this season is Brandon Porter (pictured), who contributed some key minutes off the bench for Eastvale Roosevelt on its way to its California Division I championship last March.
With the departure of Matt Mitchell (San Diego State) and Jemarl Baker (Kentucky), Porter’s role for Coach Steve Singleton’s squad will expand considerably in 2017-18.
Among the players who have yet to play a minute of “real” high school basketball, 6-foot-4 Chris Howell of San Marcos (in San Diego County) show succinctly Saturday why he will be one of the very best freshmen anywhere in California in the coming season.
Another San Diego-based player who belongs on any short list of the best freshmen prospects in the class is 6-foot-6 Obinna Anyanwu (Cathedral Catholic), who was one of the standouts during the Sept. 17 Prep Hoops So-Cal Expo at Fountain Valley High.
And the program that will attempt to defend its 2017 San Diego Section Open Division championship, St. Augustine, was well represented by a trio of Saints Saturday.
Luke Haupt (the left-handed son of St. Augustine Coach Mike Haupt) and Chibuzzo Agbo (who started for the Taeshon Cherry-led squad as a freshman) were terrific, as was sophomore point guard Kimo Ferrari.
Action resumes Sunday at 9:30 a.m., with the Top 50 All-Star Game set to tip off at 1 p.m. and the Top 25 clash expected to follow about an hour or so later.
