Prospect Spotlight: Savaughn Davis (2020)
Savaughn Davis knew coming into high school that he had big shoes to fill. When you attend Mission Bay and your older brother is former Buccaneers standout and Georgia Tech guard Justin Moore, expectations are going to be pretty high.
This summer, Davis, a 6-2 combo guard, took major strides toward stepping out of his brother’s shadows and becoming a solid prospect in his own right.
Playing for San Diego All-Stars, Davis carved up the competition with a strong dribble-drive attack. This opened up opportunities for his teammates in drive-and-kick situations.
Davis also improved his perimeter shooting, becoming a more consistent threat in the process.
Davis credits his improvement to the time in the weight room.
“One of the biggest improvements in my game is probably me getting stronger,” Davis said. “I can get to the rim with ease now, which has helped me elevate my game.”
Davis had some big individual performances, including hitting 6 threes in a game at the Pangos Stars of the Future Showcase in July, which caught the eyes of several coaches in attendance. He also scored 30 points in victories over the Compton Magic and Utah Hard Knox.
But entering into his sophomore year, Davis said he knows that Bucs Head Coach Marshawn Cherry doesn’t need him to be a big-time scorer. Alongside junior standout Boogie Ellis and fellow juniors Ronnie Latting, Jay Norton, Michael Barcia and Andre Scott, Davis said his primary goal is to get others involved.
“My role is going to be a point guard, to get Boogie the ball,” Davis said. “Boogie’s a great shooter, so Coach Marshawn wants me to set him and everyone else up and get to the rim if I want to.”
Davis said he believes he has improved his passing and court vision this summer as well, and looks forward to showcasing that on a Bucs team that many expect will compete for a CIF Open Division title.
“I want a CIF ring, same as my teammates,” Davis said. “That is the ultimate goal, we just have to keep on working.”
