To prepare for the season in the coming months, I will be dropping some City Rankings and ranking players in the area their school resides in. Here is Whatcom County’s top underclassman, meaning only players in the 2026 and 2027 classes.
Jerome, in my eyes, is easily the best underclassman in the Whatcom County area. He has the ability to takeover games and is extremely shifty and crafty with the ball in his hands. He gets to the bucket very well and can use either hand to do so. He hits deep shots at a high percentage too.
Nolan is another player who was very impressive on the court last year as a freshman. He was a key role player on one of the top teams in the 2A class and utilized his minutes very well. He knows his role and excels at it, providing a spark off the bench last year. He will be a starter and a key player on the team so will have a much bigger role.
Mantaj didn’t get very many minutes last season for Ferndale but did play quite a bit over the summer, showcasing a more well rounded game. He showed his ability to put the ball on the ground and get to the bucket using his size to his advantage. He has a smooth jump shot as well, meaning defenders can’t leave him open.
Zack showed a lot of his capabilities during the AAU season and during the high school summer league. He can play multiple positions, being able to play at the high post, wing, or even handle the ball to facilitate the offense. He runs the court very well in transition and will be a big part of his Squalicum team next season.

Hunter is a player not many people know now but they will soon to know. He is an incoming freshman who saw some varsity playing time over the summer and played a big role. He was relied on to handle the ball and use his size to find his spots and create space. He runs the court well in transition and can finish through traffic nicely. He’s a 2027 to keep an eye on.
