Recap: WCE Summer Classic- Best of the Bigs
CLAREMONT, Ca.- The second NCAA evaluation period for Division 1 coaches launched at Pitzer College and the games did not disappoint. The highlight of the night was Exum Elite taking down nationally acclaimed Mater Dei High school (Big Red Elite).
However, the story of the night was the epic “big man” battle between fellow 7-footers Bol Bol and up-and-coming junior Mathew Van Komen (Pleasant Grove/UT)—a breakdown of the match up will be posted later today.
In addition, there were a few other out-of-state standouts that “did work” as we say in the scouting world including: 6-foot-3 Hunter Erickson (Timpview, UT), 6-foot junior Rylan Jones (Olympus,UT), 6-foot-3 Jared Martin (Saguaro,AZ), and 6-foot-2 Ian Burke (Brophy College Prep/AZ).
POST STANDOUTS AT WCE SUMMER CLASSIC
Hugo Clarkin (Tesoro/Earl Watson Elite)
Clarkin has only playing basketball for a couple of seasons and with most “bigs” it takes time to develop, but this 6-foot-9ish left-hander has the tools to be a good one down the road. He has a nose for the ball in the paint and possesses good hands and solid feet.
Rickey Bell (Twenty Nine Palms/Team Eleate)
Each and every summer there are a number of under-the-radar prospects that show flashes and Bell is a prime example of this notion. He has a solid frame, good feet, and is active at both ends of the floor at 6-foot-6ish.
Wilhelm Dorsz has an advanced offensive skillset for a 2021 prospectWilhelm Dorsz (Mater Dei/Big Red 17U Elite)
After Bol Bol exits the Mater Dei campus, incoming frosh 6-foot-7 Wilhelm Dorsz appears to be the next post recruit headed to a Division 1 campus in the future. Dorsz utilizes both hands while finishing, can shoot it from deep, and is an excellent passer, and he plays with a nasty streak at both ends of the floor.
Yanyu Liu (Sierra Canyon/Cali Stars 17s Elite)
Liu is one of bigger surprises in Southern California. He’ll be taking his feathery shooting touch to Sierra Canyon in the fall. Liu measures out at about 6-foot-9 and is quite long as well. He’ll need to gain strength, but he is quite mobile (good feet) and his shooting touch is impressive.
Bol Bol (Mater Dei/Big Red 17U Elite)
A true anomaly in Grassroots Basketball. A 7-foot-2 prospect who excels at shot blocking and rim protection. A freakish athlete with tremendous timing and dexterity while defending in the paint. His post skills leave a lot to be desired, but the upside is there if the assertiveness is present.
