Today, we will be continuing my “Bluegrass State Standouts” series as we move onto another set of talented players in a new position. After breaking down explosive point guard prospects, it’s time to evaluate the top 2024 combo guards in the state of Kentucky that are worth keeping an eye on this upcoming season.
Highlights
At the top of my list of standouts is Riley Brown Riley Brown 6'3" | CG Washington County | 2024 State KY , a 6-foot-3 combo guard at Washington County High School. Brown made a huge difference on the court for the Commanders during his junior stint of high school basketball. In 33 games, Brown recorded a grand total of 338 points and 144 rebounds, averaging 10.2 points and 4.4 rebounds per game. Brown also shot 41.3% (112-271) from field goal range, 39.3% (59-150) from beyond the arc and 83.3% (55-66) from the free throw line. In addition to solid size and speed, the rising senior out of Springfield, KY. adds excellent explosiveness both on the perimeter and in the paint.

Coming in at close second on my list of standouts is Gavin Grubbs Gavin Grubbs 6'1" | CG University Heights Academy | 2024 State KY , a 6-foot-1 combo guard at University Heights Academy. Grubbs made his presence known on the court for the Blazers during his junior season of high school basketball. In 25 contests, Grubbs was the third-best scoring machine on the team, picking up a total of 231 points and 69 rebounds, averaging 8.9 points and 2.7 rebounds per game. Grubbs additionally shot 33.8% (88-260) from field goal range, 20.7% (18-87) from beyond the arc and 59.7% (37-62) from the free throw line. In addition to impressive size and speed, the rising senior out of Hopkinsville, KY. adds smart passing, efficient scoring from beyond the arc and explosiveness underneath the basket.

In 26 contests, Whitaker was the top scorer on the team, picking up a total of 482 points and 105 rebounds, averaging 18.5 points and 4.0 rebounds per game. Whitaker additionally shot 43.7% (156-357) from the field, 44.9% (92-205) from the three-point line and 83.9% (78-93) from the free throw line. On top of impressive size and speed, the rising senior out of Somerset, KY. plays fast, protects the ball and can contribute on the board with accurate shooting from anywhere on the floor.
