Prospect Spotlight: Alonzo Carter (2018)
This past season at Boca Ciega, 2018 guard Alonzo Carter made strides.
The 6’2″, 180-pounder moved into the starting lineup as a junior after making his varsity debut the year prior. Carter averaged 14.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 6.0 assists per game for a Pirates group that went to the Class 7A region quarterfinal.
“My junior year was about learning how to be not as passive as I was in previous years,” Carter told Prep Hoops Florida. “Being more aggressive with the ball, attacking the rim when it was right and making the right pass when it was needed. I learned how to become a playmaker last season. Next year I will start at small forward for Boca Ciega, but with our system, I can rotate in and out of both guard positions as needed.”
Carter is running with Team 727 this summer. He hopes to draw the attention of college coaches and prove that his hard work has paid off.
“My game has advanced in ways I couldn’t have imagined playing with Team 727,” he said. “My handle has gotten way tighter, my shot has become quicker and more efficient and my defense has transformed to the point where I can make plays on the ball I couldn’t have before.”
At age 12 is when Carter first started playing the game of basketball. He pointed to his IQ, defense and ability to get into the lane and finish shots as his biggest strengths.
He’s aiming to improve his handles and shot this season.
“I want to become and elite ball handler and get some more range on my shot,” Carter said.
No offers or interest have come just yet for Carter, but when you watch him play you see grittiness. Since he was raw in his first few varsity seasons, the unsureness showed. He’s figuring it all out and that is noticeable. Look for Carter to have a big senior campaign and draw college attention. The Division II level is where I see his fit with his attacking ability.
