A dynamic pass-first lead guard, Reed posted a 3.4-1 assist-to-turnover ratio as a junior. He excels in the pick-and-roll, where he is a threat as a shooter, a driver, or a playmaker. He pairs his creative passing instincts with a high IQ to put others in a position to score easily. He looks primed to have a huge senior year for a Cougars team that has to be considered one of the best in the class.
2.) 2023 Cade Kelderman Cade Kelderman 6'0" | PG Waukee Northwest | 2023 State IA (Waukee Northwest) – 5.4
Kelderman was the primary ball-handler and decision-maker for one of the most potent offensive teams in the state, as the Wolves averaged 70.7 points a game. He’s a physical guard who uses a quick first step and a strong upper body to get to the paint, and like Reed, Kelderman is strong in the pick-and-roll and he looks to push the pace whenever possible. He also found himself on the top-10 list of returning 3-point shooters, showcasing that he’s a really good all-around offensive guard for the state’s #1 team.
3.) 2024 Trovary Cavil Trovary Cavil 5'11" | PG Johnston | 2024 State IA (Des Moines Lincoln) – 5.2
A shifty guard who is one of the most talented all-around offensive weapons in the class, Cavil has tremendous instincts and is one of the most creative passers in the state. Sometimes his creativity can get him into turnover trouble, but he improved in that regard as a sophomore and should be even better as a junior for the Railsplitters.
4.) 2024 Redek Born Redek Born 6'3" | PG Norwalk | 2024 State IA (Norwalk) – 3.9
Born had the ball in his hands a ton as a sophomore for the Warriors, leading the team in scoring and accounting for nearly half of the team’s total assists. He’s a high IQ player who can score from all three levels, and he’s a talented passer who likes to get others involved.
5.) 2023 Jaden Harris Jaden Harris 6'0" | PG Cedar Rapids Washington | 2023 State IA (Cedar Rapids Washington) – 3.6
A 6-0 guard who can get to the rim and who looks to push the tempo after receiving an outlet pass, Harris has great court vision and has really improved his turnover prevention over the last few years.
6.) 2024 Grant Uecker Grant Uecker 6'3" | PG Urbandale | 2024 State IA (Urbandale) – 3.5
Being the primary ball-handler and playmaker in the CIML as a sophomore is a tall task, but Uecker performed admirably last season, posting a 1.6-1 assist-to-turnover ratio while also showing that he’s one of the state’s most deadly perimeter shooting threats.
7.) 2023 Jamauryus Bradford-Gates Jamauryus Bradford-Gates 5'10" | PG Waterloo East | 2023 State IA (Waterloo East) – 3.4
A quick 6-0 guard who can get to the rim seemingly at will, Bradford-Gates put together a strong junior year for the Trojans, averaging 11.1 points and 3.4 assists a game. He’s able to put a lot of pressure on opposing defenses with his ability to get into the paint.
8.) 2023 Cameron Figgs (Bettendorf) – 3.1
A 6-0 point guard who looks to pass first, second, and third, Figgs isn’t a big scorer (4.9 points a game), but he does a great job getting others involved and initiating the offense for the Bulldogs, who should be among the most improved teams in the class.
9.) 2023 Brandt Van Dyke Brandt Van Dyke 6'8" | PF Sioux City East | 2023 State IA (Sioux City East) – 3.1
A 6-8 forward who offense can flow through, Van Dyke is one of the more unique players on this countdown after averaging 9.9 points, 4.2 rebounds, 3.1 assists, and 1.4 steals a game as a junior. With his size, he sees the floor as well as anyone and uses that vision to make crisp passes to open teammates.
10.) 2023 Drew Kingery Drew Kingery 6'4" | SF Indianola | 2023 State IA (Indianola) – 2.9
This is already the third top-10 returnees list that Kingery, the state’s top uncommitted player, has landed on, which shows just how versatile he can be on both ends of the floor. He’s an elite scoring threat, but he also doesn’t force anything, which is part of the reason he lands on a top-10 assists list.
