Rainey is a tough, skilled three-level scoring guard who thrives on creating his own shot from anywhere on the floor. He showcases exceptional finishing ability around the basket, using strength and touch to score through contact. Rainey’s mid-range game is polished, with a reliable pull-up jumper that keeps defenders off balance. He’s also a threat from beyond the arc, knocking down threes with confidence and consistency.

As prolific a shotmaker as there is in all of prep school, Rainey had it going early and often from long range to key an upset win. The upstate New York product knocked down five 3s on 11 attempts, showcasing his dynamic stroke while converting on a number of difficult looks both off the catch and dribble. Rainey kept defenders honest while showing a balanced skillset off the bounce on a series of polished, hard-nosed drives. He’s not the biggest or quickest but manages to make an impact on D with his strength and smarts. As D2 programs already clamor for his services, Rainey continues to solidify himself as a legitimate D1 prospect by stacking performances like this one down the stretch of his post-grad season.

Rainey was definitely Vermont Academy’s leading scorer. He made a bunch of three pointers from all over the court and also found some space in the mid-range to get off his floaters and jumpers. However, he took a TON of shots. The speed, quickness and skill is there, but he could really benefit from balancing out his facilitation and scoring. He has the vision necessary to be a really nice passer – which he shows flashes of – but he often takes ill-advised shots. Rainey has a clear area of improvement that’ll make him a much desirable college player, and I have confidence he can make that change.

Rainey is a talented guard who can play quite effectively both on and off the ball. Off the rock, he spaces the floor very well because of his quick release and deep three-point shooting range. On the ball, he’s super quick and shifty and uses his first step to get into the lane with regularity. The unsigned senior is probably a scholarship player, but honing in on his shot selection and figuring out when to pick his spots offensively would go a long way for him. Regardless, Rainey is a really solid player who should be getting scholarship looks if he isn’t already.

Rainey absolutely strokes it from three, whether it be off the dribble or off the catch. Gets it off quickly and with great accuracy. Also handles the ball well and is able to defend bigger players despite being undersized. Rainey was the motor of Vermont Academy’s offense all day.
