In this series we’ll take a look at the top performers in each of the class games and in this piece we’ll break down the current juniors who participated.
Jaden Matingou Jaden Matingou 6'3" | CG St. Augustine | 2023 State CA-S , 2023, St. Augustine – There are few players we can think of who have helped themselves more than Matingou over this past spring and summer. The 6-foot-2 guard has come into his own as a prospect who can play both on or off the ball and play-make for himself and teammates in the open court and half-court settings. Matingou is as bouncy of an athlete as you’ll find in SoCal’s 2023 class and still has a lot of upside to realize over the next two seasons.
Jimmy Oladokun, 2023, Damien – Oladokun continues to rise in consideration as one of the top 2023 prospects in all of Southern California. His combination of inside-out scoring, combined with his ball skills and rebounding ability at 6-feet-8, make him a highly sought after forward for Division I programs. In addition to his impressive basketball skill-set, Oladokun might even be better in the classroom as he sports a 4.5 GPA and is in all advanced placement classes.
Kelcy Phipps, 2023, Bishop Montgomery – We really like watching Phipps run the show for his team. The 6-foot-1 guard is a high IQ decision-maker whose combination of speed and strength makes it tough for opposing defenses to keep him out of the painted area. Phipps is always in attack mode, but remains controlled, and gets into the teeth of the defense to create offensive opportunities for himself and teammates.
Tyler Rolison Tyler Rolison 6'0" | PG St. Bernard | 2023 State #150 Nation CA-S , 2023, St. Bernard – With each performance he puts on, Rolison continues to separate himself as one of the top point guards in the 2023 class. The 6-foot junior is smart and shifty with the ball in his hands and his ability to change speeds and direction on a dime make him a very difficult cover in both transition and open court settings. Rolison has made a major jump as a three-point shooter, especially off the catch, and has a knock-down pull-up jump shot.
Marqaden Rounds, 2023, Paramount – Rounds is an aggressive and confident attacker of the basket who slashes his way to the bucket for paint finishes through contact. The 6-foot-1 guard is both physical and fast and uses those traits to his advantage when getting downhill i n the open court. Rounds did a nice job of not forcing bad shots and let the game come to him.
