It was a great chance to get early eyes on prospects from various classes as the high school season looms closer. I’ll break down some eye-catchers from each class starting with the 2022 guards.
Donovan Peyton | 5’8 | Aberdeen
Peyton played in the EBA Summer League where I was first introduced to him and grew a liking to his presence on the floor. He’s a facilitator that thrives in structured offenses and can make sound reads and high IQ plays off the bounce. He’s improving with his ability to control the pace of a game all while having a balanced scoring approach to keep his defender guessing. Peyton’s best outing came in a win over McDonogh where he logged 15 points and four rebounds.
Kuuwon Lee | 6’0 | Reservoir
Lee got off to a hot start to the day for the Gators in their opening win over South River and Lee was a big reason why. He was hitting shots from all over the floor on his way to a game-high 16 points, six of which were generated from beyond the arc. He seemed to shoot the ball with confidence and his release looked polished. Even though he struggled to find his mark in their second game, Lee should shape out to be an important piece to the puzzle this season at Reservoir.
Zack Chin | 5’10 | Reservoir
Chin was steady throughout his team’s two games and it was in large part because of his relentless energy. He brought active hands to the defensive end both on and off the ball while being a staple in the open floor by sprinting and finishing lay ups with regularity. He didn’t allow his lack of size to keep him off the glass, as he averaged over six rebounds per game from the guard spot.
Owen Fischer | 6’2 | Loyola
Fischer is a prospect that I would be on if I was a good D3 program. His fundamentals, IQ and ability to make a shot all translate well to good local conferences within the region and he displayed that yesterday. Fischer’s best game came in a one point win over Red Lion where he led the way with 11 points. Because of his ability to knock down shots, defenders often times sprint to close out. Fischer is good at using a pump fake, putting the ball on the deck for one or two dribbles and finding space in the mid-range for pull ups that he hits at an efficient clip. He’s also not afraid to get physical and battle on the glass.
Watt was probably the most consistent marksman in the event. He connected on 5 triple’s in the two games played, but it was his confidence and form that leads you to believe he can really get it going. Watt’s team lost by one point and two points in their two contests, but he was crucial down the stretch nailing three’s to get his team in striking distance as time winded down.
Jaden Walker | 6’0 | West York
Walker had a productive day along with his team who racked up two wins. He was another prospect that showed capable shooting ability off the catch from three. He also was solid in finishing with either hand on his attempts around the bucket. Walker brought good energy to the defensive end while keeping his man in front of him in isolation scenarios.
Tyheil Peterson Tyheil Peterson 5'10" | PG Archbishop Spalding | 2022 State MD | 6’1 | Archbishop Spalding
Peterson led Spalding to a convincing win over St. Paul’s despite missing the likes of Cameron Whitmore Cameron Whitmore 6'7" | PF Archbishop Spalding | 2022 State #30 Nation MD , CJ Scott CJ Scott 6'4" | SF Archbishop Spalding | 2022 State MD and Josh Rivers Josh Rivers 6'4" | SF Archbishop Spalding | 2022 State MD . Instead, Peterson took the lead by scoring 12 points, gathering four rebounds and dishing out three assists. He nailed two three’s off the catch and the rest of his buckets came from getting downhill, beating his defender off the dribble and finishing.
Nick Jones | 6’1 | Parkville
Many of the college coaches in attendance were looking forward to seeing Jones. The 6-foot-1 guard has some of the most explosive athleticism you’ll find in the state and there were instances in their win over Huntingtown where he showcased it. He tallied multiple blocks against bigger matchups around the basket, finished dunks in the open floor and converted on floaters with soft touch. Expect JuCo programs and prep schools to recruit Jones heavily in the next six months.
Darius Fletcher | 6’2 | Huntingtown
Fletcher put pressure on the defense in both games with his willingness to get into the paint and finish. Whether it was in transition or in the half court setting, it seemed like all of his buckets came around the rim or from the free-throw line as a result of attacking it.
