We will take a look at some of the standouts from across the country, starting with part one taking a look at the top prospects from the VA and DMV area.
Justyn Fernandez | 6’6” WG | DC Premier ’22
Fernandez was one of the most followed guys in the gym throughout the weekend, he has recently blown up on the recruitment trail and it doesn’t look like it’s going to stop anytime soon. Fernandez has excellent size for his position, he’s extremely bouncy and routinely makes highlight reel plays above the rim and he can knock down shots off the catch once he gets it going. His athleticism has only gotten better throughout the years and coupled with his solid skill set he can make impressive plays on both ends of the floor.
Christian Watson Christian Watson 6'6" | SF St. John's | 2022 State #121 Nation MD | 6’7” WF | DC Premier ’22
Watson is another highly sought after wing with Premier, and he had a great weekend as one of their most consistent scorers and two way impact guys. He’s very long with good positional size at 6’7” and he thrives in transition with his ability to put it on the deck and get to the rim, he is surpassingly shifty off the bounce and is an excellent finisher in traffic. He’s intriguing on the defensive end as well as he has the length and athleticism to guard multiple positions and get deflections, and he’s a good rebounder for his position as well.
Cavan Reilly Cavan Reilly 6'4" | SG Bishop O'Connell | 2022 State VA | 6’3” WG | DC Premier ’22
Reilly is another Premier prospect who has seen his stock rise over the past few weeks, and he showed a mix of toughness and skill set that many coaches were impressed with. He shot the basketball extremely well and that’s his forte as he can come off screens and has deep range off the catch, and he also can attack closeouts and make plays at the rim and for others. He’s a high motor hustle guy and showed his toughness as he had a nasty collision that required stitches on his chin, but he was suited up the next day and ready to go.
Dominic Strother Dominic Strother 6'10" | PF Woodstock Academy | 2022 VA | 6’7” PF | DC Premier ’22
It baffles me that Strother is without much collegiate recruitment with his mix of size and ability to play on the perimeter making him a mismatch, but I also remember that college coaches haven’t had a chance to see him play live pretty much at all. He’s a mobile big who can run the floor and is very comfortable on the perimeter, he shot it well consistently from deep and brings the bigs out of the paint and he’s a good passer as well. He’s gotten stronger over the past few years and with a lack of bigs in the 2022 class for division one schools I would expect some schools to get involved with him here soon.
Marvin Brimmage | 6’3” WG | DC Premier ’23
Brimmage opened the event on a good note as he shot it extremely well in their first game, and showed he is ability to score it in bunches. He’s a good athlete that can play both on and off the basketball, he showed deep range and a quick release on his catch and shoot opportunities and he got hot quickly and rung off baskets in a row. He’s part of a talented Ireton team that could surprise a lot of people int he WCAC this winter too.
Machi Chester | 6’4” WG | DC Premier ’24
Chester is an intriguing young prospect who should be one of the top 2024 prospects in VA when it’s all said and done, and he showed no problems playing up this past weekend. He already has a good frame that should fill out nicely when he gets older, he’s very talented for his age and while he projects to be a two guard he’s very effective at creating shots for himself off the bounce. He’s a multilevel scorer who plays under control for the most part and is already an excellent isolation scorer.
Cameron Cole Cameron Cole 6'4" | PG Highland | 2023 State VA | 6’0” PG | VA Playmakerz ’23
Cole was a new addition to this Playmakerz group that already has a bevy of under the radar talent and the Highland School guard showed he’s got a lot of game. At 6’0” he’s shifty off the bounce and slippery when he gets in the lane, he can finish at the rim and in the midrange and he can stick it from deep both off the bounce and off the catch. He’s a good playmaker and a vocal leader as well, and he plays with a confidence that’s easy to love.
