UAA MDW Notables (Part 2)

Under Armour opened with their first event this weekend in Westfield, IN at the Pacers Athletic Center. I had the opporunity to cover the event throughout the three days to see plenty of talented prospects that I'll break down throughout the series of articles I release this week. <a href="https://prephoops.com/2021/05/uaa-mdw-17u-notables-part-1/">For part one of this series, click here.</a> Wisconsin PGC <a href="https://prephoops-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com/ph/uploads/2021/06/Jack-Rose.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1207108" src="https://prephoops-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com/ph/uploads/2021/06/Jack-Rose-300x225.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="225" /></a> [player_tooltip player_id="727964" first="Jack" last="Rose"] | 6'4 | 2022 -Rose had an outstanding weekend from a shooting perspective. It was my first time getting to see Wisconsin PGC in action and I was pleased with their discipline and execution in the half court. Rose had routine sets run for him to come off pin down or elevator screens to get him open shots. He showcased textbook footwork and got into his shot quickly off the catch. In transition he was lethal especially as the trailer where he'd spot up for kick-out passes when his driving teammate couldn't generate a good look for himself. Rose told me that he would like to visit Butler, Maryland, Wisconsin and Loyola Chicago among other schools that are recruiting him. [player_tooltip player_id="801136" first="Maximus" last="Nelson"] | 6'8 | 20222 -Nelson was one of the biggest breakout prospects from this event in my opinion. The 6-foot-8 forward doesn't necessarily pass the eye test, but he immediately proves his worth with his ability to score from all over the floor. He keeps it simple, too. Nelson was involved in a slew of pick-and-pop actions that torched the defense on a regular basis. When he had to put his head down and get to the rim, he'd use one or two dribbles before breaking out a spin or using his pivot foot on the stop to create space. Nelson's motor always was eye-catching. He dealt with plenty of bigs who overmatched him in both height and weight, but he used is leverage in the paint to defend rebound and hold position. It'd be smart for MM programs to get on him in a hurry. <a href="https://prephoops-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com/ph/uploads/2021/06/Learic-Davis.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1207109" src="https://prephoops-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com/ph/uploads/2021/06/Learic-Davis-300x225.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="225" /></a> [player_tooltip player_id="950097" first="Learic" last="Davis"] | 6'7 | 2022 -Davis progressively got better throughout the weekend and came up big as his team was almost upset by Nova Village in the second game. Davis scored 16 points off the bench and brought the much needed energy for his team to come out on top. He's a 6-foot-7 gangly wing that impressed out in the open floor with above the rim finishes. He used his wingspan to deflect over a handful of passes that sparked those transition opportunities and in the half court with space, he knocked down catch-and-shoot three's at a nice clip. Davis is one of those versatile wings that could spend time as a stretch four at the next level. Middle Tennessee State is the program recruiting him aggressively. <a href="https://prephoops-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com/ph/uploads/2021/05/4ccg13-1.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1204967" src="https://prephoops-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com/ph/uploads/2021/05/4ccg13-1-300x155.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="155" /></a> [player_tooltip player_id="865836" first="Jack" last="Campion"] | 5'11 | 2022 -Simply put, Campion is a winner. He's the guy any coach would want to hand the keys to the offense to and surround him with scorers. At 5-foot-11, Campion was a big reason for PGC's execution offensively thanks to his leadership and communication. His first intention on drives was to create shots for others, but make no mistake, he got his fair share of buckets this weekend. None was bigger than the buzzer-beating three to defeat Texas Impact 4:13, but that highlight alone encapsulates how Campion performs when the pressure is on. He was the first one to the ground on 50/50s, defended opposing shifty guard competently and showed great command of his team throughout the three days. https://twitter.com/ColbyGHoops/status/1399083113830096900?s=20 [player_tooltip player_id="761407" first="Luke" last="Haertle"] | 6'4 | 2022 -Haertle is another guys for this squad that showed up in big moments consistently. He's not going to wow the crowd with a crossover or dunk, but he makes the right plays at the right times and is tough as nails. Along with Davis in the game against Nova Village, Haertle scored 13 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter (many of which came in the last three minutes) to help avoid an early and surprising loss. Haertle again answered the call in a tight game against Grassroots Sizzle where he scored 21 points and did so from all three levels. He's not a guy who overwhelms you with quickness or athleticism, but like a lot of the guys on his team, he has high IQ and knows how to win ball games. DC Premier [player_tooltip player_id="904624" first="Christian" last="Watson"] | 6'7 | 2022<a href="https://prephoops-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com/ph/uploads/2021/05/Watson-Christian.jpg"><img class="size-medium wp-image-1185269 alignright" src="https://prephoops-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com/ph/uploads/2021/05/Watson-Christian-300x225.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="225" /></a> -Watson had a solid weekend when it came to creating his own shot in a half court setting. He's getting more comfortable operating off the dribble and using combo moves to get to his spots in the mid-range, where he can demoralize defenders by hitting contested jumpers. In transition his length and athleticism come to light and he did a nice job of putting pressure on the defense by attacking the rim. Defensively he was versatile as usual by matching up against multiple positions and having an impact while doing so. Watson recently received offers from Miami and South Carolina and plans to set visits with Xavier, Pittsburgh and Penn State. [player_tooltip player_id="904642" first="Jared" last="Turner"] | 6'7 | 2022 -Turner did a lot of good for his team that wouldn't show up on box scores. As the weekend went on, his playing time increased drastically because of the energy he brought off the bench. The 6-foot-7 wing played the top man of DC Premeir's press and did a nice job of forcing the ball handler into trap situations. Offensively you wont see Turner force many looks. He's good at playing within his ability and capitalizing when the opportunities come his way. Like his playing time increased, so did his confidence and this was evident in their final game against Grassroots Sizzle. Trailing by nearly 20 at one point, Premier came storming back and Turner's energy was played a big role in the effort. Premier ultimately came up short, but it was still an admirable effort. [player_tooltip player_id="837921" first="Devin" last="Dinkins"] | 5'11 | 2022 -It was good seeing Dinkins back in action for the second-straight week after he nursed an injury through April. He averaged a shade under 10 points per game for the weekend while showing his quickness and burst off the bounce. He got into the paint with regularity and forced the defense to collapse before finding open teammates along the perimeter or hanging out on the baseline. Dinkins did a nice job of pressuring the ball and staying disciplined without fouling. Nebraska Supreme <a href="https://prephoops-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com/ph/uploads/2021/06/Jasen-Green.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1207115" src="https://prephoops-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com/ph/uploads/2021/06/Jasen-Green-300x225.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="225" /></a> [player_tooltip player_id="787647" first="Jasen" last="Green"] | 6'8 | 2022 -Green was a new name for me personally but immediately caught my eye with his size and skill set. The 6-foot-8 forward moves fluidly with or without the ball and any time he had possession around the paint, it resulted in a made bucket. In their win over Riverside Hawks, Green registered 17 points and made his presence known from inside and in the mid-range. He pursued rebounds at their peak, altered shots around the rim and showed off his versatility by leading the break himself. Green told me he has a visit to Colorado dated for June 4 and Nebraska from June 11-13. At 6-foot-9, Traudt can really shoot it from outside and did so off catch-and-shoots or in situations off the dribble this weekend. He'd venture inside occasionally where he used solid footwork to make his way to the rim, but as he adds muscle to his long frame I'd expect him to go inside a bit more at the next level. His length came in handy defensively next to Green's in locking down the painted area and he was great at grabbing defensive rebounds, keeping the ball high and quickly locating streaking teammates to kick start the fast break. Truant took a visit to Creighton this week and will visit Nebraska this weekend. He'll also take visits to Virginia, Michigan State and North Carolina through the month of June.
