Over the first month of the season Caleb Nero has played the best basketball of his high school career at Tulsa Memorial. College programs saw Nero in action with Team Griffin on the Nike EYBL Circuit over the summer at the Shooting Guard spot. This winter Nero wanted to make a point to show college coaches that he has the ability to play at Point Guard.
He has been distributing the ball at a very high level making the teammates around him better. Nero is averaging 25.7 points, 6.7 assists, 5.2 rebounds and 1.7 steals per game. At the Point Nero is showing he is an overall great talent. Coach Bobby Allison has seen the hard work Nero puts in the gym pay off.
“He has put in so much gym time to work on his craft,” said Allison. “He knows how to make his teammates better and he is getting a lot of offense off his defense and team defense as well.”
Coach Allison has developed a strong work ethic within the Tulsa Memorial program. The Chargers get in the gym and get after it.
Nero gives much of the credit for his scoring outburst this year to his teammates.
“First off my teammates have been playing really good and getting me the ball in great scoring positions,” said Nero. “All the work I have put in the gym in paying off.”
He has always been a good shooter from behind the arc, but this year Nero has improved. Opponents struggle to pick their poison with Nero as he can hurt you off the dribble to the hoop as well.
This season Nero entered with a chip on his shoulder for multiple reasons. The biggest reason, Nero is still searching for a school to sign with at the Division I level. Nero is a Division I level caliber of player, and holds two Division I offers from UMKC and UNC Greensboro.
“Winning in the first thing on my mind when I play,” said Nero. “But I have a lot to prove and I’m trying to prove all of it.”
Colleges searching for a combo guard in the late signing period will find a steal in Nero. He projects to the Low Major Division I level. Nero has proven himself on the Nike EYBL Circuit on the national scene. In Oklahoma, Nero has had one of the best high school careers of any active players. Nero has led Tulsa Memorial to the state tournament since his sophomore campaign (Nero was at Booker T. Washington his freshman season).
