Prep Hoops 10 Best: Shelby vs Reynolds
10* players that stood out from Shelby win over Reynolds
Shelby High School had their first game of the season last night as they came to Western North Carolina to face the Reynolds High School Rockets. Senior point guard Quay Kimble was the star of the show, and as he made shots from all over the floor and finished with 37 points.
Credit the Golden Lion defense as Shelby started the game on a 11-0 run before a Reynolds timeout at the 4:00 minute mark in the 1st quarter. Shelby lead 19-16 after the 1st quarter. Shelby would keep up the frantic defensive pace the second quarter and held a wide margin at halftime. The Lions would push their lead after three quarters but like almost every game the other team makes a run. Reynolds would and did. The Rockets, behind the shooting and playmaking of Isaiah Pruett made a comeback and got to within 1 points 78-77 with just over a minute left. The Rockets fouled Kimble who converted both free-throws to make it 80-77. Reynolds advanced the ball to mid-court off the inbound play and called timeout but couldn’t convert the inbounds pass for a shot to tie the game. Reynolds fell to 0-2 on the season and Shelby moved to 1-0 after their season opener.
Isaiah PruettThe point guard battle between Quay Kimble and Isiah Pruitt from Reynolds was a fantastic match up. Both handled their teams brilliantly, made great assists to their teammates and made critical shots throughout the game.
MVP: Quay Kimble scored 16 points in the 3rd quarter on 4-4 shooting from beyond the three-point line and finished the night with 37 points. He is a unsigned Senior point guard who can fill it up. He attacks the basket, has a good handle, smooth stroke, great vision, and lets the game come to him. Kimble Gets out in transition but always under control.
Play of the Game: With the score 78-77, Kimble was fouled and calmly converted both free-throws with 6.7 seconds remaining to push the Golden Lion lead to three at 80-77.
Best Offensive Performance: Quay Kimble. Knocked down shots from all over the floor including five 3-pointers and four in the 3rd quarter. Finished the night with 37 points.
Best Defensive Performance: DaQuan George and Justin Boyd of Shelby HS. The long big men for Shelby were a lot to handle. Both used their length to affect Reynolds shots and each grabbed a lot of offensive and defensive rebounds.
Best Intangibles: Isaiah Pruett. The do-it-all point guard nearly led his team to a comeback. He was very vocal, made the right passes at the right time, made crucial shots, came up with big rebounds, was on the floor on a few separate occasions and was just a bolt of electricity that Reynolds needed.
Best Under-the-Radar Performance: Isaiah Pruett. Playing in WNC, getting heard of or known on the a stage throughout NC is a tough task. Pruett helped his case last night. The 5-foot-10 PG played like he is 6-foot-4, grabbing big rebounds, getting great lift on his shot and attacking the paint to make the pass to a open wing or finishing with contact on the Shelby big men.
Best Underclassmen: DaQuan George (2019) of Shelby HS is a prospect to keep a eye on. Standing 6-foot-4, George has the look and understanding of the game for a player much older. He got into foul trouble early but was a big factor in the win.
Best Passer: Trey Watkins (Shelby HS)- Watkins made great passes all night but a behind the back wrap around pass to a cutting Shelby wing for a easy lay-up late in the 4th quarter was phenomenal. The play made both sides of the gym oh and ahh.
Best Story Moving Forward: A key to Reynolds HS’s season will be Isaiah Pruett and how much of a scoring load he can take on per night. He has the ability to score from all over the floor, for Reynolds to be successful the ball must be in his hands.
