Though these seven players did not crack our initial 2023 rankings released before the summer AAU season, don’t be surprised to see them ranked in the future as they all had strong summers and have a promising mix of skill and potential.
Dylan Omweno (6′ 2023 G, Apple Valley)- Dylan is a player who I’ve talked a lot about since first seeing him back in July, and it’s because every time I see him play he seems to take over a game. He is one of the best scorers I’ve seen in the 2023 class, with a promising blend of speed, change of pace, shooting range, and crafty finishing ability around the rim. Dylan has an extremely dangerous hesitation move that he uses to blow by his man, and if you sag off he’s not afraid to pull up from deep.
Owen Carlson (6′ 2023 G, Mahtomedi)- One of a few promising players in the Mahtomedi system, I’ve had a chance to see Owen play with both Crossfire and Minnesota Heat at the 15u level, and he impressed both times. The lanky guard has a promising skillset with a crafty handle to create off the dribble, a smooth pull-up jumper, and intriguing passing vision to drop dimes to his teammates. He seems to glide across the floor when he has the ball, and makes beating defenders off the dribble look easy. Add in the ability to finish above the rim in transition, and you have a prospect worth tracking over the next three years.
Ariyon Reuben (6’4 2023 W, Park Center)- Year after year it seems like Park Center is producing talented basketball prospects, and the 2023 class is no different. Ariyon Reuben has a high ceiling playing on the wing, and comes from basketball bloodlines. He’s now grown to 6’4, and features a long and wiry frame that adds to his potential on the defensive end. Offensively he may not be a major scorer yet, but he’s shown a lot of potential as a creator off the dribble, and I’ve seen him hit some tough shots with the defense contesting closely. If Ariyon starts making those types of plays at a more consistent level over the coming years, he could start to blow up as a prospect.
Mario Adams (6’4 2023 F, Eastview)- Mario is another player who I’ve had the chance to watch a lot over the past 2-3 months. He has solid length at 6’4 with a wiry and mobile frame. Athletically he has the explosiveness to elevate and finish above the rim off one or two feet, and he’s not afraid to do so in traffic. Like his twin brother Myles who I’ll talk about later, Mario has a versatile skill-set for his size that allows him to finish around the rim, hit outside shots, and create some off the dribble.
Ian Boyd (5’8 2023 PG, DeLaSalle)- Ian Boyd had an impressive summer running with Howard Pulley 15u, and although he may lack size, Ian is lightning quick and skilled with the ball. His quickness combined with a tight handle allow him to get to any spot on the floor, and he’s able to elevate on his pull-up jumper to get his shot off over length. He’s proven that he can compete both alongside and against high level competition during the AAU season, and he’ll be continually battle tested in practices at DeLaSalle over the next three years.
Molley Komara (6’4 2023 F, Park Center)- Another one of the long and athletic prospects out of Park Center, Molley Komara plays even bigger than his height suggests. He has an impressive wing span and some promising athleticism that allows him to pull down rebounds in bulk and contest just about everything around the rim defensively. Offensively he’s still pretty raw, but he showcased a soft touch with both hands around the rim, and has developing footwork to create high percentage looks when isolated on the block.
Myles Adams (6’4 2023 F, Eastview)- A consistent two-way performer for Minnesota Select during the summer, Myles Adams impacts the came in a variety of ways. His length and mobility allow him to defend on the wing and on the block, with his long arms allowing him to contest around the rim. Offensively he can create some space and knock down shots off the dribble, as well as possessing the passing vision to set up his teammates to score. Had some impressive games against tough competition over the summer.
