I wanted to give a rundown of players from the state of Iowa that got to play this summer and showed well. Here is the class 1A-3A shooting guards that stood out to me.
Cole Glasgow Cole Glasgow 6'2" | SG Dallas Center- Grimes | 2022 State IA , 2022 – 6’3 SG – D1 Minnesota/All Iowa Attack 16U & Dallas Center-Grimes High School (3A)
To go along with Josh Dix Josh Dix 6'5" | SG Council Bluffs Lincoln | 2022 State #149 Nation IA in the 2022 class, this is the contender for that top perimeter spot in the class. Cole Glasgow Cole Glasgow 6'2" | SG Dallas Center- Grimes | 2022 State IA is a really athletic 2 guard, who can also play the point/lead guard. Glasgow first impressed at the beginning of the summer season in Ames where he consistently scored for the All Iowa Attack in many different ways. Highlight dunks were something that rolled across my screen all the time by Glasgow. To pair with that, in another tournament I watched him with D1 Minnesota, Cole showed his deep range shooting abilities hitting a couple that I had to take another look to see where he shot it from. He’s a really confident player who if you didn’t come to watch at first, you will end up watching once you see him. He’s an able ball handler who can get the offensive in scoring positions, and is a good passer on the move. Glasgow had no offers from DI programs coming into the summer but is coming away with two offers from both South Dakota schools. I have no doubt he will open more eyes this upcoming winter with the Mustangs.
Keaton Kutcher Keaton Kutcher 6'2" | SG Mount Vernon | 2021 State IA , 2021 – 6’2 CG – Martin Brothers 17U & Mount Vernon High School (3A)
The South Dakota commit doesn’t have to produce offensively during the summer in the way he does during the winter season, but he fills a shooting role for Martin Brothers. Kutcher is one of the best shooters in the state of Iowa. Proof of his shooting abilities is that he attempted almost 9 three pointers last season and made 40% of them for his high school team Mount Vernon. During the summer Kutcher tends to slide off the ball more for his team than he does his high school team, but in light of that he is provided with more opportunities to come off screens to get open looks. When he is playing on the ball he is a good scoring PG, who scores from all three levels. Keaton will move on to the DI Summit Conference in the fall of 2021, and I’ll be looking for him to make an instant impact for the Coyotes.
TJ Harkins TJ Harkins 6'0" | SG Earlham | 2021 State IA , 2021 – 6’3 SG – Pure Prep 17U & Earlham High School (1A)
TJ Harkins TJ Harkins 6'0" | SG Earlham | 2021 State IA is a sniper from the perimeter. For his high school team last season Harkins shot the 3 point shot 13 times per game, and shot it at a 37% clip. Along with the aforementioned Keaton Kutcher Keaton Kutcher 6'2" | SG Mount Vernon | 2021 State IA , TJ has an argument for one of the best shooters in the state of Iowa. He has a quick release, and shoots it most efficiently off the catch. The corner three point shot is where he can thrive for his team if the defense gives it to him. Otherwise, Harkins has the ability to take the ball off the dribble and on the screen-and-roll and hit shots. He’s mainly a 2 level scorer right now, but he’s a really good scorer at that. He possesses a good pull-up jumper off the pump fake and dribble attacking defensive closeouts, and can take dribble hand-offs well to get into the rhythm of his shot. He has good shooting footwork with his hands ready whenever he doesn’t have the ball. I would like to see him come off some screens in order to get open against more tightly run defenses. Nonetheless, Harkins could be a good 3-and-D player at the next level for a lucky program.
Brayson Laube Brayson Laube 6'2" | PG Marion | 2023 State IA , 2023 – 6’0 CG – Iowa Barnstormers 15U & Marion High School (3A)
When we talk about players in the 2023 class, we’re talking about potential. Brayson Laube Brayson Laube 6'2" | PG Marion | 2023 State IA is a player who will continue to get attention in this class based on what he can be, and what he already is. Laube really excels at shooting the ball at the current moment, and more specifically shooting it off the catch on the perimeter and even has shown an ability to shoot off the dribble. He’s a good ball handler who could project at either guard positions in the future as he isn’t a mistake guy. Something I have liked out of Brayson is his ability to read screen defenses and use them to get an open shot or create for a teammate. He is the ultimate competitor and competes at both ends of the floor. If Brayson continues to grow and develop his game he will be another 2023 prospect to watch in the state of Iowa.
Karson Sharar Karson Sharar 6'2" | SG Iowa Falls-Alden | 2021 State IA , 2021 – 6’3 SG – All Iowa Attack 17U & Iowa Falls-Alden High School (3A)
A note that I took when watching Karson is, “does a little bit of everything, especially score”, and I’d say that about sums up Sharar in one sentence. His 2019-2020 winter season stat line was 23 points per game, 3 assists per game, and 7.5 rebounds per game and was elected to the all-state team which shows you that he can do it all on the hardwood. He uses a handful of head fakes, dribble moves, and step backs to get his defender off balance in order to exploit them with either hand. He can score it at all three levels using a nice looking jumpshot, finishing through contact, or shooting it off of a dribble hand-off. Sharar has received interest and offers from both DI and DII programs so far throughout his recruitment and that shouldn’t stop going into the winter season with the Cadets.
Ashton Hermann Ashton Hermann 6'4" | SG Ballard | 2022 State IA , 2022 – 6’2 SG – Kingdom Hoops 16U & Ballard High School (3A)
Ashton Hermann Ashton Hermann 6'4" | SG Ballard | 2022 State IA was a 2022 guard who I didn’t know fully know about before the summer season, but I’m glad I got to watch him. He is a savvy player on the perimeter where he can shoot it, or drive it with some crafty ball handling. He’s a competitor on the defensive of the ball and makes it difficult for opposing offensive players to score and has active hands. He averaged nearly 3 steals per game this past season for Ballard. He’s athletic and can throw it down in the open court, where he looks to get out and run the floor. His effort is top notch on the court, and he shows that by crashing the boards, going after every loose ball, and taking pride in his defense. Hermann could be a good slashing guard for a college program down the road, and he will look to build upon a strong summer season this winter for the Bombers.
Adam Mattes Adam Mattes 6'3" | SG Newton | 2022 State IA , 2022 – 6’3 SG – All Iowa Attack 16U & Newton High School (3A)
With a strange summer season going on this year, there were different ways that recruits and prospects were trying to get exposure. Well at the Top 64 league, in Pella, Mattes made the all league team and had scoring outputs of 34, 33, and 28 respectably. In other words he can fill it up on the court. He was Cole Glasgow Cole Glasgow 6'2" | SG Dallas Center- Grimes | 2022 State IA ’s running partner on the All Iowa Attack and in tournaments they participated in this summer, Mattes used his jumpshot and ability to take smaller defenders in the post to be effective. On his high school team he is used in the post quite a bit as he has nice post moves and can finish around the rim with either hand. He pairs that piece of his game with a nice shooting stroke that he uses out to 22 feet or so. When he takes his man off the dribble he uses a nice spin move to effectively get to the hoop. Mattes will look to build upon his solid last year, this winter, with the Newton Cardinals.
Tanner Te Slaa Tanner Te Slaa 6'5" | SF Boyden-Hull | 2022 State IA , 2022 – 6’4 SG – South Dakota Attack/South Dakota Venom 17U & Boyden-Hull High School (2A)
One of my favorites, and another name in the discussion for best class of 2022 perimeter player, Te Slaa is a position flexible player who is a knockdown shooter. Te Slaa is a good ball handler and is fully capable of running the offense and handling ball pressure from the defense. South Dakota Attack/Venom played some tough competition on the circuit and Tanner was a catalyst for the offense. He possesses a cool crossover move that he can cross a defender into a jumpshot, or double it with a drive to the basket that he can finish through contact. His main attribute is his shooting ability where he can knockdown open shots off a pass from his teammate, but he hits contested jumpers from range as well. He has range that can extend out to about 22-23 feet and hits shots efficiently, posing a 45.5% from the 3 point line this past high school season. He’s not afraid of the big shot either as we’ve seen in a couple tournaments this summer season where he hit big shots to either tie or win a game for his team. Tanner collected scholarship offers from Northern Iowa, North Dakota, and South Dakota to go along with other mid and low major interest at the DI level.
Keaten Bonderson Keaten Bonderson 6'0" | PG Gehlen Catholic | 2023 State IA , 2023 – 6’0 CG – South Dakota Attack 15U & Gehlen Catholic High School (1A)
Putting up 18 points per game at any level in varsity basketball is impressive, but doing it as a freshman is another level of impressive. Keaten Bonderson Keaten Bonderson 6'0" | PG Gehlen Catholic | 2023 State IA , is another 2023 prospect who has impressed in his one year of high school hoops. He’s a bouncy combo guard who could project at either position, and shows a nice level of poise and patience with the ball in his hands. It’s been reported that the SD Attack 15U team only lost one time this summer which says something about what Bonderson can bring to a team. He makes quick moves when he catches the ball and can pull-up from 15 feet with a nice jumpshot. I’d like to see more efficiency in his numbers this winter shooting the ball, but there’s no doubt Keaten can shoot it with a nice repeatable shot. As has been said before on other 2023 prospects, it will be good to see Bonderson develop over the next three years. He will see the ball a lot this coming winter and I think we will see an uptick in production.
Kasen Bailey Kasen Bailey 6'3" | SG Washington | 2022 State IA , 2022 – 6’1 CG – Iowa Barnstormers Gold 16U & Washington High School (3A)
I came away impressed by Kasen Bailey Kasen Bailey 6'3" | SG Washington | 2022 State IA and the way he plays intelligently. Bailey possesses a good basketball IQ and uses that to put himself in good positions on both ends of the floor. He is a capable on-ball defender who plays good help side defense for his team. Also, a good ball handler who never gets out of control, and moves the ball well. The best attribute that Bailey has is his shooting touch. He has good ability to catch and shoot and has his hands readily available to shoot it. This summer showing glimpses of his shooting ability off the dribble that he can build on going into the Winter. Kasen shot 42% from 3 point land last winter and averaged 13 points per game to go along with that, he and Washington could be a sneaky team in the 3A layout.
