Continue ReadingAn added bonus to seeing SEBA’s 17U was the chance to meet and see Jason Smithson’s SBT 17U squad, another class organization he runs together with his brother Bryan that has a high-quality rep in Georgia for doing things the right way. His squad doesn’t frighten you getting off the bus, but are the kind of group which unassumingly goes out and then burns you for a 20-point “L”.
Here’s who couldn’t be missed:
Kervens Yacinthe Kervens Yacinthe 6'5" | SF Paulding County | 2021 State GA (Paulding County, 2021, CG) – If any of SBT’s kids strikes an imposing figure in warmups it’s the 6-5 Yacinthe, a crafty left-hander with a deceptive handle who ran the point for a good portion of the night, but likely will see a larger future off the ball, he can definitely shoot it from distance but was a bigtime handful getting to the rim off the bounce, he’s also a terrific rebounder, which from my seat seems a waste to have him lagging out past the arc at PG every possession, need to see some right-hand development to ease the pressure of defenders favoring his left side, but he’s a classic ATL-area high-ability sleeper who folks in west Atlanta know about but for whom this summer will be massive for greater exposure of his notable all-around game.
Trey Harris Trey Harris 6'4" | SF North Paulding | 2022 State GA (North Paulding, 2022, SG) – I didn’t have an SBT roster in front of me during the night, all I had was what the kids were wearing, and Harris had a shirt on that said “Dominate”, so my notes were littered with bullet-points highlighting how “Dominate” couldn’t miss a shot from any spot on the floor, and it was true, Harris was unreal for all points, swishing through silky jumper after jumper until I couldn’t shake my head any longer, few players I’ve seen so far this summer go about their business of scoring from the perimeter with as much ease and instinct as Harris, he moved better with the ball than I thought he might after seeing his lethal set-shooting, so playing up with the 17U’s will only accelerate his development and make for a fascinating summer and winter next season for the lean, 6-4 gunner.
Griffin Cherry (North Paulding, 2021, PG) – Yet another unassuming character in appearance, the 6-0 Cherry nonetheless showed a ton of grit against a very physical bunch of SEBA guards, he’s got a really good handle and a hearty willingness to get into traffic to finish or draw contact, pretty quick off the bounce he can still stop and pull the jumper on you as well, teamed with Harris in both the summer and next year’s Wolfpack backcourt should see both of them appear and/or take a jump in our rankings.
