Continue ReadingWith summer AAU basketball finally getting underway in some states, we take a look at seven intriguing prospects to watch for in the 2022 class. These prospects all offer a unique blend of skill, length, and athleticism that make them players that college coaches will want to keep on their radars.
Cody Pennebaker Cody Pennebaker 6'5" | SF Park Center | 2022 State MN (6’4 2022 G, St. Francis)- Cody is a guy we have ranked pretty low, but looks primed to make a huge jump when we update our rankings next. After adding a couple inches, Cody now possesses the length to play either guard spot, and has the skill-set to excel in either role. His movement with the ball in his hands reminds me a lot of Tyrell Terry, as he looks so fluid and composed maneuvering in the open floor. With a mix of outside shooting, explosiveness, and crafty finishing ability, Cody could be in for a strong 16u season running with Minnesota Heat MacDonald.
Brady Helgren Brady Helgren 6'8" | C Edina | 2022 State MN (6’8 2022 F, Edina)- It’s rare to find the combination of length and perimeter skill that Brady Helgren Brady Helgren 6'8" | C Edina | 2022 State MN possesses at an early stage, and it’s a big reason why he’s one of the top forwards in the class. Brady has a consistent outside shot coupled with the motor to compete in the paint and finish off contested looks inside. One big aspect of his game that sticks out to me is his ability to accurately launch outlet passes up the floor. His size allows him to see up the floor after rebounding, and he’s able to lead streaking teammates towards the basket for easy transition looks. He’ll play with Minnesota Fury 16u.
Makuei Riek Makuei Riek 6'5" | SF Rochester Mayo | 2022 MN (6’5 2022 W, Rochester Mayo)- Joining Cody Pennebaker Cody Pennebaker 6'5" | SF Park Center | 2022 State MN with the Minnesota Heat, Makuei Riek Makuei Riek 6'5" | SF Rochester Mayo | 2022 MN appears to be next in line to dominate the city of Rochester. Riek is an extremely long wing that has mobility in the open flood, a long stride that allows him to euro-step around defenders to finish, and a soft touch on his pull-up jumper. He has the prototype size and athleticism that scholarship schools look for in a wing, and with a strong summer schools will start to take notice.
Hassan Kamara Hassan Kamara 6'4" | SG Columbia Heights | 2022 MN (6’4 2022 W, Osseo)- Though his numbers dropped after transferring to Osseo for his sophomore season, the potential is clear when looking at Hassan. He has a well built 6’4 frame with extremely long arms that prove to be effective on the defensive end. Offensively he has a high arcing three point shot that he hits at a solid rate, and he’s added some explosiveness making him an above-the-rim finisher in the open floor. He’ll compete with Howard Pulley 16u.
Buom Jock Buom Jock 6'5" | SF Mankato West | 2022 VA (6’5 2022 W, Mankato West)- Playing for Minnesota Fury Narum 16u this summer, Buom looks poised to blow up as a prospect. A lanky wing prospect with an automatic pull-up jumper from mid-range, the ceiling is high for Jock. Buom does a good job at changing his pace to get to the basket, and once in the lane he’s able to contort his body in mid-air to finish through traffic.
Hakeem Ford Hakeem Ford 6'5" | PF Minneapolis Southwest | 2022 State MN (6’5 2022 F, Minneapolis Southwest)- Hakeem Ford Hakeem Ford 6'5" | PF Minneapolis Southwest | 2022 State MN packs plenty of potential into his long and agile frame. The size and athleticism are there to play the energizer role for his team, and although he doesn’t possess an advanced skill-set, the physical attributes at this point are enough to catch one’s eye. He’ll be one to watch for Minnesota Heat Grow 16u.
Payton Mogire Payton Mogire 6'8" | C Maple Grove | 2022 State MN (6’9 2022 F, Maple Grove)- Payton Mogire Payton Mogire 6'8" | C Maple Grove | 2022 State MN is a player who caught my eye playing for Maple Grove’s JV team this past winter, and he’ll take his intriguing frame to Howard Pulley for the 16u summer. Mogire has loads of length and solid mobility, while also having showcased the confidence to knock down outside jumpers. He runs hard in the open floor and has the athleticism to finish above the rim in transition or off a simple drop step. His AAU team has cited a handful of D1 programs taking early notice in his potential.
