KHSAA Basketball season starts officially on October 15th and this season looks to be pretty open. There is so much talent in the bluegrass state right now and this season is shaping up to be a great one. It's time for my annual "Top 5 Preview" where I break down the top 5 teams and college prospects in each region. These are the top 5 college prospects, not the top 5 high school players right now.

Top 5 Teams:

Warren Central - The Dragons are essentially a dynasty at this point. They or Bowling Green win the region every year and Warren Central has been rattling off more titles than BG of late. Coach Unseld's squad is deep and has a lot of athletes. [player_tooltip player_id='2326410' first='Armani' last='Byrd'] is one of the top Seniors in Kentucky and is primed for a big season.

Greenwood - Greenwood has a real chance to get to Rupp Arena this season. New Coach Shawn Savage gets a veteran roster that is built to win right now. [player_tooltip player_id='2876775' first='Ethan' last='York'] is a talented wing prospect and [player_tooltip player_id='2628368' first='Martell' last='Tuttle'] is a potential breakout star in his Senior season.

Bowling Green - The Purples are young but talented and it's possible this roster is ahead of schedule and they win the 4th this season. [player_tooltip player_id='2851868' first='Anthony' last='Davis'] and [player_tooltip player_id='2988365' first='Tre' last='Thomas'] are two Sophomores who could make a big leap this season. I think Davis could be the best player in the region already.

Logan County - The Cougars return most of their team from last season, including Senior point guard Davis Switzer. Switzer averaged over 21 points per game last season. I'm a fan of Sophomore [player_tooltip player_id='2897227' first='Benton' last='Wheeldon'] and he could be a breakout player this season for what could be the best Logan County team we've seen in a while.

Barren County - Junior [player_tooltip player_id='2474820' first='Weston' last='Shelton'] leads a Barren roster that will need to replace Kade Hardy but does have several quality pieces returning. Coach Cunningham's squad should make the regional field but will have a tough time knocking off whichever Bowling Green area teams make it to Diddle Arena.

Top 5 College Prospects:

[player_tooltip player_id='2326410' first='Armani' last='Byrd'], Warren Central - A long and athletic wing that is committed to Western Kentucky. Coach Unseld told me a couple of years ago that Byrd could be the best player he's ever coached. If Armani reaches those heights, Warren Central will be heavily in the mix to win state.

[player_tooltip player_id='2851868' first='Anthony' last='Davis'], Bowling Green - Davis is a two sport star who already has multiple D1 offers in football. On the court, he's a skilled wing forward that plays above the rim and always has his motor running. Look for Davis to position himself as one of the top players in the region, regardless of class.

[player_tooltip player_id='2988365' first='Tre' last='Thomas'], Bowling Green - Bowling Green will be very relevant in the 4th region title race if Thomas makes the kind of strides he's capable of. A heady floor general who excels at running a team, Tre has the tools to be the best point guard in the region as soon as this season.

[player_tooltip player_id='2876775' first='Ethan' last='York'], Greenwood - An underrated athlete who plays with a great motor, York is potentially a scholarship level player. Ethan is a real difference maker for the Gators and the battles between him and [player_tooltip player_id='2851868' first='Anthony' last='Davis'] could be what determines if Bowling Green or Greenwood ultimately makes it to Diddle.

[player_tooltip player_id='2125714' first='Kash' last='Carter'], Warren Central - Carter has had some injuries in his high school career but if he's 100% healthy for his Senior season, he can make all the difference for Coach Unseld's squad. With his ability to get into the paint on offense and keep opposing guards out of the paint, Kash is a true difference maker.

Most Likely Mr. Basketball Finalist:

[player_tooltip player_id='2326410' first='Armani' last='Byrd'], Warren Central
