New readers: Use code Proia30

I drove down to Henrico, VA this past weekend to check out one of my favorite events in CBG's Fall Warmup series , the Juco Prep Showcase. CBG does a great job of bringing in the top local prep schools to compete against junior college and high school groups as we gear up for another high school season. In this article, we'll break down the top point guards that I saw this weekend. Let's get to it!

-I was not surprised to learn that Nelson is the son of a current D1 basketball coach after watching him play this past weekend. The incoming freshman has very advanced feel and doesn't get sped up by double teams, love the way he works through his read progressions like a quarterback to find the best option for his team. His ability to space the floor with his shooting and see the floor as a passer from the wings makes him equally as effective as an off-ball guy that understands how to pick his spots within the flow of the game. Nelson plays with great pace, has a knack for drawing fouls to get his opponent in foul trouble, and does a great job of protecting the rock while running the offense for a fun Trinity group.

-I've been watching Rojas-Joy play since he was in middle school and continue to believe that he is one of the toughest, most competitive guards in the nation. Love that he always raises his level of play in tough moments down the stretch, whether that means he is throwing the go-ahead assist or protecting the basketball to accept the take foul and knock down some big free throws. His shooting allows him to be effective off-ball and he has really improved his ability to finish with either hand around the basket. He's also taken some nice strides at the defensive end of the floor to use a strong center of gravity to absorb contact on drives to the rim without picking up blocking fouls for impeding the progress of his opponent. You tend to bet on players that show an ability to simply figure it out in tough moments, excited to see how his game develops further in this postgrad year with AOA.

-Honestly think he may have been the most talented player in attendance as Hunter continues to prove that he's one of the most difficult players to guard in the area with the ball in his hands. Hunter has an elite first step that he uses to generate paint touches to score or assist a teammate, is shooting the ball with much better balance off the dribble, and has really taken some big strides with his shot IQ/efficiency in new threads with Highland. Hunter's speed and scoring craft in transition make him one of the most dangerous threats to score as he should continue to dominate the EPL as one of the area's best point guards.

-Carson has been one of my favorite supporting guard prospects in the area for a few years now as he has proven his value as an absolutely maddening gnat of a POA defender. Carson utilizes quick feet and even quicker set of hands to blow up ball screens at the top of the key that has a devastating effect on opposing defenses. Love that Carson is finding opportunities to be selfish for a few more possessions and use his driving lanes to the rim to get a bucket for himself. If he can prove that he can knock down perimeter jumpers at a high clip and add more weight to his frame, I think that Carson can play his way into a scholarship this season.

-I liked what I saw from the rising senior as a dynamic athlete that can really fill it up in a hurry for his team. Brown plays with a great change of pace and it is complimented by a lightning quick first step to turn the corner and get downhill in a hurry on an opponent. Brown put pressure on the rim, pushed the pace effectively in transition, knocked down shots behind screens, and served as an effective off-ball shooter that hit some timely shots. His speed and aggression in the halfcourt is a lethal combo to get the step on his matchup and keep that advantage all the way to the rim. One of the more slept-on talents in the state!
