Due to the immense amount of talent that churns through the DMV area each season, I don't need to spend a ton of time traveling to out of area events because there are so often high-level events to attend to locally. But I do make it out of the area several times to get notes on some national names, especially during the summer months of AAU and scholastic live periods. In this article we'll break down a few of the top 2029 names that I saw this summer. Let's dive in!

-Got a chance to see Bush compete for the first time at the CP3 Rising Stars camp and really came away impressed with his pace and burst in the halfcourt. When it comes to his pace, it's not just the quickness that makes him special-- it's how seamlessly he can change direction to weave through a defense and how smoothly he gets to his pull-up going either direction. His activity as an off-ball mover that understands the importance of footwork (his footwork on movement threes throughout the weekend going either direction was among the best in the camp) and timing often frees him up for kick-out jumpers that he calmly drilled over a litany of different defenders. In an era that places a premium on self-created offense that is effective from all 3 levels, Bush is a national name that should be on coach's radars early on in his HS career.

-The combination of pace and handle continue to be elite not just in his class but in HS basketball as a PG that understands timing and angles extremely well both in the halfcourt and in transition. Weaver is exceptional at drawing two defenders and throwing timely passes around opponents to pass teammates open or hit them in specific windows. Loved the diversity of his scoring at the CP3 camp and in AAU on the 3SSB circuit as we saw him slash downhill to score his regular baskets at the rim but also saw him hit several 3s off the bounce, hit runners with nice touch high off the glass going either direction, and showed a nice set of finishing moves around the basket. Defensively- he uses a quick set of hands well to disrupt his matchup's dribble and passing ability, but he really understands how to get under his opponent to take away all of their leverage. I interviewed Weaver on my podcast earlier this year, to get a feel for who he is off the floor-- tap in here.

-The scoring overshadows the passing but he can really really pass the ball and is a great decision-maker in crowds in the middle PnR. Cabana plays with great pace, gets into his shot smoothly from all 3 levels, understands the value of supplementing the jump shooting with trips to the FT line, and uses an escape dribble to effectively pass around double teams. His ability to feel that pressure and improvise on the fly-- coupled with his off the dribble shooting-- I think will make him a top-30 player in the country when all is said and done. The son of his HS coach, his feel in negative hot spots on the floor for most players is what really sets him apart as he is a great decision-maker when tight-roping the baseline or when he's pushed out to the sidelines by hard hedges. His ability to both score and facilitate with great positional size sets him up nicely for a great career at the HS level and beyond.

-Loved what I saw from Terry this summer as a perimeter prospect that really excels at creating his shot from 18' and in. Terry showed phenomenal burst in the open floor and a great first step in the halfcourt, can attack the rim with his left or right hand, knocked down open perimeter jumpers, and was a very dynamic finisher in transition. Love the way that he harnesses his explosive drives by knocking down pull-up jumpers from the elbows with ease, with both consistent follow-through and balance on a shot that is usually a tough look for a prospect at this young of a stage in his development.

-Kane is kinda DMV-adjacent as a Richmond prospect but I have really liked his game in different settings this summer as an unselfish guard prospect that shows really good feel out there on the floor. Playing for a stacked AAU team, I thought Winiarski made the most of his opportunities to create on the ball while he did an excellent job attacking closeouts to make plays for himself or others as an off-ball guy. Winiarski can knock down shots off the bounce with some range, has good positional size for his age, doesn't turn the ball over or get sped up, and is a great passer that can create in the paint or serve as an effective connector from the wings. When it's all said and done, I wouldn't be surprised to see him finish top 5 in the state as a versatile guard prospect with a huge ceiling.
