Fall workouts getting going in the month of September and this morning I made my way to Gibson Southern where the Titans have the talent to be not only one of the best 3A teams in the area, but one of the best overall teams. There were 25 kids that were at the workout this morning with some key players missing because of Fall Sports, but these are my notes from Gibson Southern:

Three Headed Monster

The Titans will return arguably the top trio in the area in Seniors [player_tooltip player_id='3266681' first='Knoxx' last='Lamb'], [player_tooltip player_id='2891750' first='Reece' last='Runyan'], and [player_tooltip player_id='2140411' first='Kolton' last='Schmitt'] bringing back 37 points, 11 rebounds, and 4 assists combined per game from a 17-7 team.

Coming off an excellent spring and summer playing for Indiana Red 17u and a great June with the Titans, [player_tooltip player_id='3266681' first='Knoxx' last='Lamb'] is one of the most nuclear microwave scorers in the area. Electric with the ball in his hands. Wired to score and does it from all three levels. Really showed his speed and quickness this morning where he lived in transition creating turnovers and pushing the tempo off misses. Plays with tons of confidence and will have games in the season where he surpasses the 20 point mark.

If Gibson Southern is ultimately going to have the season that they are expecting to have, [player_tooltip player_id='2891750' first='Reece' last='Runyan'] will have to step up and take over the leadership role. The 6'2” senior guard seems to get better and better every time I see him. Noticeably quicker and more athletic than the past. Has always been an excellent shooter of the catch and off the dribble, but he's now becoming more of an all around scorer that can get to the basket and finish. The returning All-Conference guard will be one of the tougher matchups in the conference for opponents to contain.

Not many players in Southwest Indiana create the mismatch that 6'6” 2027 Wing [player_tooltip player_id='2140411' first='Kolton' last='Schmitt'] does every possession on the offensive end. Versatile scorer with length and size that is one of the top shooters not only in the area, but in the entire state. Deep range with a high release, Schmitt is a threat to score from all over the floor. He does a good job using his size to his advantage in post up situations. Soft touch and good footwork around the rim. Comfortable facing up in the midrange and has gotten consistently better over the last couple years with putting it on the floor. He will enter the season as one of the frontrunners for Southwest Indiana Player of the Year Honors.

Newcomers

The Titans have a few holes to fill from the graduation of their starting point guard, starting wing, and backup guard spot, three players stood out in the form of 6'5” 2028 wing/forward [player_tooltip player_id='3476218' first='Merexx' last='Kuester'], 6'6” 2028 center [player_tooltip player_id='3770728' first='Elijah' last='Warner'], and 5'10” 2027 guard [player_tooltip player_id='3770766' first='Clayton' last='Gries'] with the potential to play impactful minutes this season. Both played key roles on the JV a season ago.

An intriguing long term piece with as much raw athletic ability as any player on the Titans roster. Long and athletic wing that can impact the game on both ends of the floor. Runs the floor well and rebounds it well. A bit raw offensively but has shown he can knock down the open three. Will be an impact role player that should bring energy off the bench for the Titans.

Bruising 6'6” center in the 2028 class that I got to see for the first time last season as a sophomore on the JV, and the improvement he has made in not only his skill, but in his body and conditioning. Big physical frame with really nice footwork and good hands. Does a good job on the defensive end clogging the paint and rebounding. Won't be relied on to score much this season but will be able to provide size off the bench.

Starting JV guard last season will make the jump to full-time varsity as a senior and be a big time shooter off the bench. A bit of an unorthodox skill set, [player_tooltip player_id='3770766' first='Clayton' last='Gries'] isn't the quickest or most athletic player on the floor, but is a high IQ guard off the ball that understands how to get open and has a quick release to get his shot off.

A Look in the Future

There were two 2030 prospect that caught my eye this morning at the Gibson Southern Open Gym in 6'1” Guard Colin Menke and 5'9” Guard Luke Bailey. Neither will see any varsity this season as freshman, but their skill set and size really stood out. Both will be worth remembering in the future.
