I drove out to Spalding this past Sunday to catch up some high level bump between local HS and prep teams with a few out-of-town groups testing their mettle against local squads as we gear up for another season. The event was a great opportunity to see some fun cross matchups between the local leagues that we don't usually get to see during the season. In this article, we'll dive into the prospects whose nightly performance will be crucial to their team's success this season.

-Top scorer of the day with a 25-point performance that showed the full range of Oxendine's skillset in a game that came down to the closing minutes against Poly. Oxendine has some big shoes this year with the graduation of 4-year starters in the backcourt and looked the part on Sunday as a much more confident decision-maker and ball-handler. Oxendine's ability to weave through the defense in transition led to at least 5 coast to coast layups off of the defensive rebound, scoring before his opponent could get set as a he flew by multiple defenders in the open break. Oxendine knocked down perimeter jumpers off the catch, hit several shots through contact, used his pivot to score effectively in the paint, and is much stronger finishing through contact at the rim this season.

-One of the most decorated players to come up in Anne Arundel County, it's been a pleasure covering Scott for the past 3 seasons as he has ascended from unranked to top-15 in the class. Scott contributed in his usual role as the leading scorer for his team but is also doing a much better job of finding teammates on his paint touches and really popped at the defensive end with several big-time blocks from the help side at the rim. Scott's ability to score in transition and earn steady trips to the free throw line are the key to his consistency as he steps into his final HS season looking for a state championship.

-Carroll has a nice blend of skill in their frontcourt their season, but none more skilled than Clark as a confident shooter and connector from the top of the key. Clark knocked down open jumpers, was a good decision-maker in DHO possessions on the wings to either create an easy shot for himself or a teammate, and is getting off the ground better to finish at a higher level around the rim. His ability to stretch the floor will be huge for a Lions group that is looking to replace one of the most prolific scorers in school history.

-Williams had an up and down afternoon as he works to become more familiar within a voluminous Coolidge guard rotation this season. Williams will probably be the Colts' best bet this season to run the point as a throwback pure PG that excels in PnR possessions and can execute passing reads in tight windows in the halfcourt. Love the way that he sees the floor and gets teammates involved on a roster that graduated a ton of shot creation--including the reigning Player of the Year. If he can keep the turnovers to a minimum and create high-percentage looks for his teammates, he should be a huge piece for the Colts this season.

-Puffenbarger's incremental improvements continue to catch the eye of our scouts as a consistent low post threat that is maximizing his touches on the block by getting into his move much more smoothly and quickly to score before the defense can get a good contest. Puffenbarger is doing a much better job of keeping the ball high to cut down on turnovers in the paint, is shooting a better percentage from the charity stripe, and spaces the floor well all the way out to the 3 point line as a pick n pop threat that should be a force in the MIAA for the next few seasons. In an area that doesn't often have a ton of high-level size, he has a chance to really make a name for himself and usher in a new era of success at BL.
