It's only September, but before we know it the season will be upon us. With that, the preseason content begins and as we get sneak peeks during fall events, it'll help us put together stronger predictions.

For now though, we explore different angles in highlighting the 2026-27 season and for this article, I dive into seven prospects I believe will be centerpieces for their teams.

Of the players included in this article, Avery is going to be leaned on to do the heaviest of lifting for his respective team. There's no doubt that he has the talent and ability to be a dominant presence on both ends of the court and if he's able to supply the necessary motor to be that consistently, the top-60 national ranking will back itself. His combination of size and athleticism make him one of the top prospects in the region and as he continues to fine tune aspects of his game operating in the mid-range or even on the perimeter, he'll pose as a mismatch nightmare as he looks to shoulder the Cavs through the BCL/MIAA this winter.

The anchor for a young, but experienced Gonzaga team entering the 2026-27 season, Mbuymba has spent the spring/summer improving his body and conditioning. The results are pretty drastic and the production has followed with his steady numbers in E16 play for [program_tooltip program_id='2077004' first='Team' last='Takeover']. The Eagles enter this season as one of the sneaky, dark horse type of teams who can muster a potential run in the WCAC. Mbuyamba quietly churned out double-doubles as a sophomore with his elite ability to establish and maintain leverage on the block. He cleans up misses on the offensive glass, hauls in defensive rebounds in bulk and poses as a score or passing threat in the post. What he lacks in positional size, he makes up for with high-level instincts, touch and motor.

The keys were passed down to Washington once Acaden Lewis, who is now at Miami, left for Villanova after an impressive high school career. Now entering his junior season, Washington has a legitimate argument as being the area's top defender. It's not often that you see a point guard control the game from the defensive point of attack quite like he can. He prides himself on the number of steals he accounts for rather than being obsessed with how many points he scores. As a result of the tenacious defense he applies, he generates transition opportunities for himself or others, which can be back-breaking buckets considering Sidwell looks to slow the overall tempo of games in the half court. [player_tooltip player_id='2353562' first='Ian' last='Condon'] is the bell cow for Sidwell and there's no denying that, but Washington is quickly the next most important piece that will keep the winning standard that head coach Eric Singletary and his staff has established in their MAC dominance.

Stanfield is set for a big season at Calvert Hall and with the Cardinals losing a couple of pieces in the offseason, it makes his production and role even more critical. The 6-foot-6 hybrid forward has proven himself over the summer that he brings one of the best motors you'll find in this local class. What has helped his game blossom even more has been the improvements in his frame and becoming a more functional athlete. Much of his offense is likely to come on catches in the mid-post where he can operate in isolations, but he also must be accounted for on the catch beyond the arc. With his feet set and enough time, Stanfield can convert from three with consistency, but it's his relentless effort on the glass that makes him an intriguing prospect. The middle of the pack in the BCL/MIAA is going to be very fluid and if Calvert Hall plans on having a chance to be in the upper tier of that group, they'll need every bit of Stanfield's production.

Moore is one of the underrated scorers in the DMV. His twitch allows him to establish advantages in almost any one-on-one scenario and if he decides to stop on a dime and pull up inside the arc, the lift he gets on his jumper makes life even harder for opposing guards. As a freshman and sophomore, Moore would tend to settle for tough ones when he picked up his dribble, but now he's become more dynamic on drives and capable of finishing with craft, converting at a nice rate. He's getting better at drawing contact where he can pile up points at the charity stripe and has recently showed flashes of being a more willing playmaker as defenses stack up the paint to halt his drives. The Eagles are among the teams who can be in the middle of the pack within the MIAA, but their potential will rely on Moore's efficiency and expansion as a guard that can not only create opportunities for himself, but for others as well.

Early is coming off an impressive summer with [program_tooltip program_id='2076999' first='Team' last='Melo'] at the E16 level and while he had his highs-and-lows as a sophomore, I expect him to hit the ground running as a junior. Stepping into more of a leadership role for Mount St. Joseph, the southpaw combo guard will be expected to do a little bit of everything, but looks to be the primary option when games get tight. He plays with an effective change-of-pace approach to get to his spots in the half court. If he can consistently hit the three-ball, it'll allow him to really expose his defender with the manner he gets to his spots off the dribble from 15-to-17. In transition, Early is liable to put it on defender's heads. He caught a couple of posters last season and has only since become more of an explosive athlete. The Gaels are expected to be contenders in the BCL/MIAA and while they have their share of talent in the backcourt, Early will be the determining factor when all is said and done.

Wylie is a guy I expect to have a huge season and will be included in more preseason content this fall. One of the higher upside prospects in the local 2028 class, Wylie brings a unique blend of size, skill and athleticism that not many others can match. He gained significant experience this spring/summer as the focal point for [program_tooltip program_id='2077004' first='Team' last='Takeover'] Showcase 16s and looks to parlay that this winter as the primary option for New Hope. The flashes he provided as a sophomore were loud, but his team was equipped with guys who could take the pressure off him from a playmaking standpoint. This season will be different in that he'll be expected to generate things on this own while also providing a rim presence defensively. He has the capability of checking all the boxes, now we wait to see if he's up for the challenge.

It's only September, but before we know it the season will be upon us. With that, the preseason content begins and as we get sneak peeks during fall events, it'll help us put together stronger predictions.
