New Teams, Big Expectations: Oklahoma Transfers

The Oklahoma high school basketball landscape looks much different than it did just a few months ago. With offseason transfers, reclassifications, and new opportunities across the state, several players are set to make immediate impacts in new uniforms. Here are some of the most impactful transfers to know heading into the 2026-27 season.    Previously a Putnam City North standout, [player_tooltip player_id='1437034' first='Mekhi' last='Thomas'] made the move to join one of his fellow Oklahoma Chaos teammates at Newcastle, the home of the reigning 5A state champions. Thomas is coming off a successful summer where he routinely dropped 20 or more points and consistently proved he could take over games when his team needed a bucket.   He's a tough 6'2 guard who plays with confidence and never looks rattled under pressure. He has shown he can run the offense as a lead guard while also stretching the floor with his ability to score from all three levels. Thomas attacks downhill with purpose, finishes through contact, and has the vision to create quality looks for his teammates. He should fit seamlessly into the Racers' system as they look to replace a key piece in the backcourt and defend their state title.     [player_tooltip player_id='2140736' first='Drew' last='Eckel']'s return to the Crossings Christian Knights' gym when his new OCA squad arrives will be nothing short of an intense showdown. Eckel joins an already talented OCA team where he'll be a perfect addition to the backcourt. He's one of the purest shooters in the state, capable of changing the momentum of a game with just a couple of made threes.   He excels in catch-and-shoot situations thanks to his quick release, high arc, and fearless confidence. If defenders give him even a sliver of space, he'll make them pay. Eckel also moves well without the basketball, consistently finding open spots on the floor and creating easy scoring opportunities. His shooting ability is exactly what OCA needs as the Saints look to make another deep playoff run.     The former Edmond Santa Fe standout, DeWayne McKinney, took his talents to John Marshall to finish his high school career. McKinney had a strong junior season where he earned valuable minutes against some of the state's toughest competition. At 6'5, he's a versatile combo guard who brings size, athleticism, and plenty of 6A experience to a talented John Marshall squad. That experience should translate well as he enters 4A competition.   McKinney reminded everyone of his scoring ability this summer when he erupted for 46 points in a single game. He's a relentless downhill attacker who thrives in transition, finishes through contact, and has the athleticism to rise above defenders at the rim. His combination of strength, speed, and explosiveness makes him one of the toughest matchups in Oklahoma entering the season.     The former Norman North guard, [player_tooltip player_id='2194540' first='Deacon' last='Garza'], is headed just south of town to lead the Noble backcourt. Garza is the type of prospect every coach loves having on the floor because of how fundamentally sound he is. He consistently makes the right play, competes on every possession, and impacts the game in several different ways.   Standing at 6'2 with a strong frame, he uses his size well to absorb contact, crash the glass, and defend multiple positions. His jump shot has continued to improve, allowing him to confidently score from the mid-range and beyond the arc. Garza's leadership, toughness, and all-around game should make him one of Noble's most important pieces as the Bears look to compete this winter.     The former Deer Creek freshman enters his sophomore season with a fresh start at Edmond Santa Fe. I was very impressed with the amount of growth [player_tooltip player_id='2957674' first='Jaleel' last='Shyne'] showed throughout the summer. He became a major piece for his [program_tooltip program_id='2387159' first='Southern' last='Ties'] squad by making an impact on both ends of the floor.   One of the biggest improvements in his game was his confidence attacking defenders. He showed he can not only glide past defenders with his quickness but also use his strength to bully his way to the rim and finish through contact. Shyne has continued to add to his offensive game while remaining active defensively, and his motor stands out every time he's on the floor. Expect him to continue developing into an important contributor for the Wolves this season.
