Division 4, Sectional 2: First Look

Three teams outside of this sectional a year ago could very well put together a deep playoff run. Newcomers Stanley-Boyd, Washburn and Thorp will push holdovers such as Hurley, Marathon, Neillsville, Crivitz and St. Mary Catholic, among others, for the sectional crown. Led by 6-foot-9 North Dakota State recruit [player_tooltip player_id='2411648' first='Charlie' last='Hoel'], Stanley-Boyd moves to Division 4 from Division 3 while both Thorp and Washburn move up from Division 5. There is good balance among both the top and bottom halves of this sectional, which figures to send one of the state's top Division 4 teams to the WIAA State Tournament next March. Stanley-Boyd</a> -- When you have one of the more dominating frontline players in the state on your squad, you are likely headed for success. Stanley-Boyd has that luxury again this winter as [player_tooltip player_id='2411648' first='Charlie' last='Hoel'], a mobile, active and skilled 6-foot-9 forward, is back for his senior season. Hoel, who has committed to North Dakota State, averaged 20.7 points and 11. rebounds a year ago when the Orioles finished 22-5. Three additional all-league performers return for coach Dakota Nichols in senior [player_tooltip player_id='2828192' first='Brenner' last='Myers'] and [player_tooltip player_id='2873574' first='Brayten' last='Mallo'] along with junior [player_tooltip player_id='2696683' first='Josiah' last='Demske']. Demske, a second-team pick, is a physical 6-foot-7 forward and his size coupled with that of Hoel gives Stanley-Boyd one of the top frontline combinations in Wisconsin. St. Mary Catholic</a> -- The Zephyrs boast an experienced, deep and high-scoring squad led by four returning starters in seniors [player_tooltip player_id='2508290' first='Luke' last='Fairweather'], [player_tooltip player_id='2920553' first='Tarver' last='Trinkner'] and [player_tooltip player_id='3022387' first='Max' last='Vosters'] along with junior Dylann Brenn. All four averaged at least 9.0 ppg a year ago when St. Mary Catholic finished 17-9 and all four are capable shooters from deep. Fairweather runs the team at point guard and is a three-year varsity performer entering his final year of prep basketball while Brenn is a long, lanky and extremely skilled wing and Vosters provides some muscle and finishing ability in the post. Trinkner is good at getting to the basket while senior [player_tooltip player_id='3022389' first='Alex' last='Klinkhammer'], junior [player_tooltip player_id='2346902' first='Gavin' last='Beck'] and sophomore [player_tooltip player_id='2884280' first='Caleb' last='Vogel'] also could play important roles for coach Paul Bradshawn's squad, which figures to slug it out with another Division 4 power, Howards Grove, for the Big East North title. <a href="https://prephoops.com/team/wi/marathon/" data-type="link" data-id="prephoops.com/team/wi/marathon/"> 3. Marathon </a>-- Even with the loss to graduation of three starters, Marathon once again looms as a serious title contender in the seriously strong Marawood South Conference. Now in his 16th year as head coach at the school, Adam Jacobson and his stable coaching staff have established the Red Raiders as one of the best Division 4 programs in the state. Two regulars do return for Marathon from last year's 25-3 squad in seniors [player_tooltip player_id='3020879' first='Garrett' last='Bracewell'] and [player_tooltip player_id='3020877' first='Logan' last='Peters']. Both averaged in double figures as juniors and form a strong one-two scoring punch. Senior [player_tooltip player_id='3020878' first='Sawyer' last='Berens'] averaged 8.3 ppg off the bench while senior [player_tooltip player_id='2982932' first='Ean' last='Shuda'] contributed 6.1 ppg as a reserve. Both players figure to contend for starting roles along with newcomers from a JV1 team that went 22-2. The Red Raiders have averaged 20.5 wins per year during the Jacobson tenure. <a href="https://prephoops.com/team/wi/hurley/">4. Hurley</a> -- Hurley won 23 games last season, but the North Stars did lose four starters to graduation. Still, Hurley is a traditional power in the Northern Lights Conference and does have some experience returning. Coach Mike Swartz will count heavily on returning starter [player_tooltip player_id='2797962' first='Logan' last='Schilling'], a 6-foot-5 senior forward who averaged 17.1 points and 10.3 rebounds as a junior. Schilling is the returning Player of the Year in the Northern Lights and should get plenty of help from a pair of talented sophomores in [player_tooltip player_id='3644995' first='Landen' last='Christoferson'] and [player_tooltip player_id='3644996' first='Wesley' last='Schilling']. Kewaunee</a> -- Coming off an undefeated league season in the Packerland Conference, Kewaunee looks to successfully defend its league title behind the return of a pair of all-conference performers in juniors [player_tooltip player_id='2841334' first='Diesel' last='Bosdeck'] and [player_tooltip player_id='2841336' first='Dane' last='Harrell']. Bosdeck led the Storm in scoring a year ago at 14.6 ppg while Harrell topped the squad in rebounding at 9.1 rpg. Both players possess very good size at around the 6-foot-4 mark and both are proven performers for a team that went 26-1 last winter. Sleeper Team <a href="https://prephoops.com/team/wi/crivitz/" data-type="link" data-id="prephoops.com/team/wi/crivitz/">Crivitz </a>-- Winners of 77 of 80 games over the past five seasons in the Marinette & Oconto Conference, Crivitz attempts to capture its sixth consecutive league crown behind the return of senior [player_tooltip player_id='3019584' first='Brayden' last='Sellen'] and junior [player_tooltip player_id='3019579' first='Colton' last='Arpke'], a pair of talented guards who each earned honorable mention all-conference laurels last season. Another guard, sophomore [player_tooltip player_id='3722642' first='Landon' last='Thoma'], also figures to play an important role for a very quick but undersized squad at Crivitz, which must replace the graduated Kade Thoma, who earned Player of the Year recognition in the Marinette & Oconto Conference in 2025-26.
