Wilsonville Summer Tourney - Fresh Faces

Wilsonville hosted its annual summer tournament on June 19-21 with a loaded field that included some of the top teams in the Portland Metro area. We had the opportunity to drop by and catch a number of games and one of the things we've loved about this event every year is it gives us the chance to see some fresh faces that will be contributing on varsity squads next year. Here are some of the top ones that we noticed.    A lot of familiar names on Jesuit's squad that captured the title at the Summer Tourney but one face that turned heads was Alleman. He certainly fit the description of the "classic" Jesuit player - hard-nosed, good shooter/defender, plays great team basketball. The rising junior certainly made his share of open shots and made plays with the hoop. But what caught our eye with Alleman was his athleticism and toughness - which should come as no surprise as he was the Metro League district champ in the high jump. We are looking forward to seeing more from him on the court in 2026-27.     A couple of the starting spots are still open at Sherwood for next season and based on what we saw, if Codling-Howard doesn't get one he'll be getting plenty of playing time. The rising sophomore is long, athletic, and plays hard and was a factor in each game we saw of his in the Summer Tourney. Codling-Howard was particularly active on the offensive glass in a win over Valley Catholic, posting 11 points and 6 rebounds. He's a coach's kid too as his mother is Lauren Howard, head coach at George Fox.     Another Bowman that caught our eye was Barton, who made an impact whenever he got on the court. The rising senior is a talented offensive player who showed he could knock down the three, but also get to the hoop and make athletic finishes. The depth at Sherwood is once again deep but we fully expect Barton to get plenty of minutes in 2025-26.     One of the most intriguing players we saw at the Summer Tourney was Balderson. The rising sophomore stands 6-foot-5 (and possibly still growing), has length and athleticism, and a real nose for the basketball. While his offense is still in development, he's a naturally good rebounder, has great instincts on defense, and plays hard to boot. A three-sport athlete, we are looking forward to seeing how his progress on the basketball floor continues.     Comerford got some time off the bench for Cleveland last year but he was starting at the point for the Warriors at the Summer Tourney. The rising senior is a gritty competitor, a team basketball player that looks to make the right play on both ends of the floor. In Wilsonville he showed that he could score a bit too, knocking down open perimeter threes and also converting some tough layups in transition. He calmly handled pressure and looked to make plays for others as much as himself.     One of the hardest workers we saw in the paint all weekend was Kanyako. The rising sophomore was always on the hunt for the basketball on both ends of the floor and was always keeping the ball alive on the offensive glass. While the majority of his offense came on putbacks, he showed a solid mid-range jumper and he also ran the floor well. His shining moment came when he knocked down two clutch free throws to close out their opening round win over Marshfield.
