The skills of the 13u class were on full display over the weekend. These players took their games to another level.

Deonte Winston 5-3- 2031- Dayton Leadership Academy- Team Flyght Future 13u

Deonte was the obvious leader of Team Flyght Future 13u. He was the primary ball handler and facilitator. Deonte excelled at getting to the basket and making tough shots. He's a hard-nosed player who did whatever the team needed to be successful. If Team Flyght Future 13u needed him to score, rebound, assist teammates or make defensive stops, Deonte made it happen. He showed the ability to make a high percentage of his shots throughout the game. When he wasn't attacking the rim, he knocked down mid-range jump-shots. Deonte was great at using the dribble to attack opposing defenses. When Team Flyght Future 13u had an opportunity to score transition points, Deonte was the catalyst who either scored or assisted his teammates with accurate passes. In my opinion, Deonte is a great all-around player who is capable of playing the lead guard position at an elite level. Keep it up Deonte!!

Phillip Bowers 5-8- 2030- North Dayton School Of Discovery- Team Flyght Future 13u

Phillip played hard on both ends of the court. He's an excellent ball handler with a quick first-step. He used that step to easily blow by defenders and score in the paint. Phillip is an excellent all-around player who does everything for Team Flyght Future 13u. Whether it was scoring, passing, rebounding or defending, Phillip was the teams' “glue guy.” He's also a great rebounder. Phillip had no problems battling for rebounds despite being shorter than his opponents. The majority of his offensive boards led to second chance scoring opportunities for his teammates. Phillip is a great mid-range shooter who is capable of extending his range beyond the three-point line. On defense, he blocked a shot and had a couple of steals. In my opinion, Phillip is a tough guard who shows the promise of becoming a star player. Keep working Phillip!!

Baron Crum 6-1- 2031- Pikeville Middle School- Team Goose 2031

This guy is a shooter! Baron is the type of player who easily gets into the zone. He's a serious threat from beyond the three-point line. Baron always found ways of getting open within the offense. He used screens and cleared out space by using a variety of dribbling moves. There was a sequence in the game when he jab-stepped his opponent and immediately launched a long distance three. He nailed the shot and instantly got into his defensive stance. Baron has unlimited range. The majority of his threes were shot from well beyond the arc. Don't be fooled by his talents as a shooter! Baron is a shifty two guard who's capable of attacking defenders and scoring at the rim. In Saturday's game against the Michigan Tarheels 13u squad, he won most of his one-on-one matchups on the court. Baron is a great scorer who knows his role as Team Goose 2031's best shooter.

Trace Short 5-7- 2031- Mercer County Middle School- Team Goose 2031

Trace was one of the best combo guards I watched over the weekend. He's a strong player who showed a knack for scoring through contact. Most of his drives to the basket, led to three-point play opportunities from the foul-line. I appreciate the hustle he showed on both ends of the court. Offensively, Trace stayed in “attack mode” throughout the game. Whenever he had the ball in his hands, positive results showed. He's a great one-on-one player who often took advantage of defenders guarding him in isolated situations. He achieved this by attacking down hill or knocking down perimeter jump-shots. Defensively, he was a ball-hawk. Trace used great hands and quick lateral movements to force multiple turnovers. He was great at applying pressure on opposing ball handlers. Trace is an exciting young player who has a chance of becoming elite at his position.

Christian Miller 5-5 2030- David Ellis Academy West- Michigan Tarheels 13u

Christian is a talented scorer! He's great at getting to the basket. In the match-up against Team Goose 2031, Christian scored in a variety of ways. Whether it was beating opponents off the dribble, scoring from mid-range or knocking down three-pointers, opposing players had no answers for him on offense. When Christian had one-on-one match-ups, he immediately went to work on Team Goose 2031 players. These circumstances often led to him scoring or assisting teammates with high level passes. On defense, he played great on the perimeter. His on-ball pressure forced numerous turnovers and led to easy transition scores. Christian is a great all-around player who is destined to have a big summer this AAU season.

[player_tooltip player_id='3344110' first='Rodney' last='Hayes'] III 6-1- 2030- Northridge Middle School- Team Flyght Future 13u

Rodney is an athletic big man who scores in the paint, attacks the glass and defends. He used a variety of moves to score in the post. Rodney was great at scoring with either hand in the paint. During the game I noticed a nice fade away jump-shot as part of his scoring arsenal. He often gained position in the post and knocked the shot down multiple times. When Team Flyght Future 13u had opportunities to score in transition, Rodney finished strong at the rim. He's a great rebounder who aggressively grabbed boards on both ends of the court. Most of them led to more scoring opportunities for himself or his teammates. Defensively, his timing was great when blocked shots. He finished the game with three. Whenever Michigan Tarheels 13u players attacked the paint, guess who was there to alter their shots? Rodney! He's a promising young player with a bright future ahead of him.
