LADERA RANCH — Session 1 of the adidas-led 3SSB circuit tipped off last Friday morning with some of the top prospects from around the country making their way to OGP Ladera for the three-day event. While we watched plenty of nationally-ranked prospects over the weekend, we wanted to take some time to spotlight a handful of under-the-radar California guards who stood out.

[player_tooltip player_id='2137369' first='Asante' last='Johnson'] | 2027 | Lakeshow 17u

Johnson brought the defense and team-first approach that he plays with at Salesian College Prep to another program that prides itself on toughness and sharing the ball in Lakeshow. The 6-foot-1 combo guard showed his value as a point of attack defender and help defender with his combination of physicality and IQ on that end of the floor. Offensively, Johnson can handle and initiate offense, get physical paint touches and score at the rim in transition.

[player_tooltip player_id='2307230' first='Cisco' last='Munoz'] | 2027 | Open Gym Premier 17u

Munoz is a true point guard with high level feel for the game and the ability to control tempo and make smart decisions under pressure. The 5-foot-11 junior out of La Mirada high school is well-paced in transition and half-court offense, uses crafty changes of speed and direction to keep defenders off balance and really looks to get teammates involved. Munoz averaged 13.3 points and five assists per game.

[player_tooltip player_id='2215141' first='Cole' last='White'] | 2027 | Team Lillard 17u

White is an unheralded guard for Team Lillard whose numbers don't necessarily show the impact he makes on the game in his reserve minutes. The 6-foot, Archbishop Riordan junior is a high motor combo guard who comes in with an aggressiveness and relentlessness on both ends of the floor that brings a change of pace and tempo to the floor. White is a pesky defender with quick hands and feet and has blurring speed in downhill transition settings where he puts pressure on the rim and scores in the paint.

Owen Hatch | 2028 | Open Gym Premier 16u

Hatch is one of the more impressive shooters we saw among the 16u level of competition. The 6-foot-4 sophomore out of Orange County-based Tesoro high has good positional size, fundamental shooting mechanics, a strong base and balance and moves smartly without the ball to create open looks. Hatch knocked down 10 triples on the weekend and averaged 12.5 points per game in helping OGP go 4-0.

Sammell Humphries | 2026 | Gamepoint 17u

Humphries was one of a handful of unsigned seniors who boosted their stock on the weekend. The 6-foot-1 point guard is an intriguing prospect with his combination of size, length, quickness, athleticism and microwave scoring ability. Humphries, who helped Victory Christian Academy win the San Diego Section Open Division title, used his combination of burst and ability to absorb contact and stay on balance to put pressure on the rim off the bounce and scored on mid-range jumpers and crafty layups. He averaged 18.3 points on the weekend.

[player_tooltip player_id='2436261' first='Sloane' last='Harris'] | 2027 | Compton Magic 17u

Harris plays a gritty and physical brand of basketball that works well coming off the bench for Compton Magic. The 6-foot-3 combo guard is a defensive-minded player whose ability to pressure the ball, slide laterally, and put his chest on drivers frustrates opposing guards and keeps them out of the lane. Offensively, Harris is a downhill attacker of the rim who absorbs and finishes through contact.

Tristan Beechler | 2028 | Lakeshow 16u

Beechler is a tough-minded, hard-playing and high IQ guard out of Central California who impacted the game on both ends of the floor. At 6-feet-4 with a strong frame, steady ball skills and the fearlessness to earn paint touches, Beechler bullying his way into the lane and did a really nice job of playing under control to find teammates for open shots.

[player_tooltip player_id='2534808' first='Van' last='Moczydlowsky'] | 2028 | California Gold 16u

We're convinced Moczydlowsky is bound for a breakout spring and summer after what we saw over the weekend. The 6-foot-4 combo guard, who is known locally for his three-point shooting ability, showed that he is adding some drive-and-score capability to his game. Moczydlowsky was out in transition and attacking the rim with confidence, playing through bumps and contact and showed an improved pop of vertical athleticism with a couple of impressive dunks. The lefty averaged 18.3 points per game during Session 1.
