The Spartans helped to forge a three-way tie for first place in the Big Eight Conference on Wednesday with a convincing 74-49 win over visiting Middleton. Coach Steve Collins, who recently notched his 500th career coaching victory, then ended the week with a league win at Madison West. Through 10 league games, Madison Memorial, Middleton and Verona all have 9-1 league marks. Against Middleton, senior wing Anderw Braun had a big game, scoring a team-best 23 points while also coming up with three steals and blocking three shots. Senior guard

Although still two games behind Oostburg in the standings, Cedar Grove could prove to be a very difficult out once the playoffs get underway in March. Against Kohler, Cedar Grove registered a 68-62 victory behind 21 points from

DIVISION 5 ... CATHOLIC CENTRAL
Wins have been few and far between over the last few seasons for Catholic Central. The Hilltoppers won just five games last season and only one two years ago. First-year coach Dan Meddaugh has guided Catholic Central to four wins thus far and has the Hilltoppers playing some very competitive basketball. Even in several losses, Catholic Central has been very competitive, losing to Messmer 84-83, Brookfield Academy 69-68 and Heritage Christian 54-49 in recent weeks. In a Midwest Classic Conference win over Kenosha Christian Life Saturday, the Hilltoppers registered a 69-41 win behind 25 points from junior wing
