New Year, New Prospects: 2026/2027 Houston Perimeter Players

The start of district basketball in Houston this year has been a sight to see with teams fighting for prime position. Starting with the beginning of 2026, I was able to catch a variety of games across town, including West Fork/Kingwood Park, Seven Lakes/Tompkins, and Beaumont United/Barbers Hill. All of these games had several standout players who are definitely capable of playing at the next level and being a focal point on their respective squads. Let's lock in and focus on some players who stood out to me in all facets of the game!    [player_tooltip player_id='2112011' first='Payton' last='Jones'] finished the 65-43 victory over Barbers Hill with a resounding 22 points and this doesn't even count the extra work he put in on defense and running both guard spots on offense. The opposition simply didn't have an answer for the 2027 guard as he sliced and diced the defense repeatedly for consistent and easy buckets from all three levels. Jones was a major help crashing the glass on both sides of the ball and he helped handle the basketball under full court pressure for a good duration of the game. Jones continues to prove why he is an elite prospect in Texas for the class of 2027, and he is also coming off a strong AAU grassroots summer as well.     Jose has been considered one of the top unsigned seniors in Houston this year and for good reason. First, he is a main contributor on undefeated Seven Lakes this season and he still puts up consistent and efficient numbers scoring the basketball even on a team with so much talent. Second, Martins has a great shooting touch off the dribble and knows how to get to his spots and create space for himself with the ball in his hands. Jose has great speed in transition is an underrated perimeter defender as well. In a 75-48 routing of Tompkins to begin district, Jose was a top scorer and demonstrated that he is capable of being a multi-tool player at the collegiate level.     Genaro had a cool and collected 13 points and 8 assists in the West Fork Gators' 63-40 win over Kingwood Park last week in enemy territory. Garcia runs the point guard slot with good precision and pace, showing good court awareness and displays a great pass-first play style that helps WF put points on the board quickly. He also showed an ability to score off the pick and roll and was able to drive past opposing defense multiple times to the rim and get right back on defense. Look for this sleeper 2026 prospect to make some noise for the Gators this season as they are off to a hot 3-0 start in district.     Josh is a great combo guard ballhandler for BMT United in crunch time situations and he is able to change the pace of the game with ease to benefit his team. Josh got to the basket against taller defenders throughout the entire contest and made it look easy scoring the ball off the glass. He also knocked down multiple three pointers from deep range to start off the Timberwolves with an 8-0 run in the district matchup. Coleman is a great pace setter and floor general for the Wolves and impresses me more every time I watch him with his playmaking and scoring prowess, even being the shortest player on the court. He was an important part of a 65-43 victory over the BH Eagles.     Dean made most of his impact in the Seven Lake's game making backdoor cuts and finishing with authority at the basket. Spencer has good off the dribble speed and knows how to move well off the ball and be in the right spot at critical times to get buckets for the Spartans. His teammates always know that they can find him open for a lob to the rim, a perimeter jumper, or somewhere he will get fouled and cash in at the free throw line. His perimeter defensive intensity was unmatched, and this resulted in several steals leading to easy transition opportunities to extend the lead. One of the 2027's who has made his way onto my radar, I will be looking for Dean to continue his high momentum play this season as the Spartans look to stay undefeated as district continues on.     Luis was a lights-out perimeter shooter in West Fork's away 63-40 victory over Kingwood Park to start off the new year. Garcia came away with 11 points in the game, making the defense pay on the perimeter and capitalizing on open looks at the rim. His perimeter defense and ability to play passing lanes helped his team get opportunities to score on fastbreaks and pull away in the second half. Garcia impressed me with his motor and hustle for loose balls and his willingness to help rebound on both sides of the ball.
