KEYS TO THE GAME

It's darn near impossible to overcome a 40-3 disadvantage from the foul line. And, as Sun Prairie West found out Wednesday in a Big Eight Conference outing with visiting Madison Memorial, that huge discrepancy proved too tall of a mountain to overcome for the Wolfpack. Madison Memorial sank an impressive 33-of-40 attempts from the free throw line and maintained a lead throughout the game in posting a 69-57 triumph to remain tied for the league lead with Middleton and Verona. Madison Memorial improved its mark to 16-1 and got 22 points from [player_tooltip player_id='1756988' first='Anthony' last='Miller'] and 20 from [player_tooltip player_id='2495043' first='Andrew' last='Braun'] while also playing a difficult-to-solve combination of zone and man-to-man defenses that slowed Sun Prairie West. Sun Prairie West slipped to 5-12 despite battling for the entire game and getting 18 points from junior [player_tooltip player_id='2454568' first='Jahleel' last='Weah']. The Wolfpack made 10 three-point shots but just couldn't stop Madison Memorial's trek to the foul line as the Spartans were able to grind possessions and then get the ball to a cutter who either scored or was fouled.

With future college coach Casey Korn of Lawrence University looking on, Braun picked his spots and put in an efficient 20 points for Madison Memorial in its win over Sun Prairie West. The 6-foot-2 wing guard made two shots from outside the three-point arc, finished off two nice drives to the basket and also made all eight of his foul shots. Braun has worked hard over the past several seasons to become the player he is today -- one of the elite performers in the Big Eight Conference.

Now a senior and four-year varsity performer at Madison Memorial, Miller knows a thing or two about how to win games in the Big Eight Conference. He had a game-high 22 points and made an impressive 11-of-12 foul shots to help the Spartans secure their triumph. But it was his three-point shot from near the top of the key late in the game that gave Madison Memorial the cushion it needed to post the win. Miller had three triples in the contest and is always ready to let it fly from deep once he gets the ball in shooting position.

The Bradley University baseball recruit played a big role for Madison Memorial in its win over Sun Prairie West on Wednesday evening. A versatile 6-foot-5 wing player, Liggon scored 11 points and swished four-of-four foul shots in the closing minutes of the game for the Spartans. Liggon has good size, good athleticism and a good skill set as he scored at the rim, from outside the arc and with a nice mid-range jump shot.

Weah proved to be Sun Prairie West's most consistent scoring option against a Madison Memorial defense that made it tough all night long on the Wolfpack. Weah used his exceptionally ball handling and creative moves to create space from his defender and get some looks at the basket. He finished with 18 points on the strength of four three-point jumpers, two mid-range jumpers and a couple of free throws.

THE BIG PICTURE

Madison Memorial won its 13th game in a row and moved to 16-1 with the win over Sun Prairie West. The Spartans are in the midst of a tight race for the league title in the Big Eight along with Verona and Middleton. The result of next Tuesday's contest between Madison Memorial and visiting Verona figures to go a long way toward determining the league winner. Verona is the lone team to beat the Spartans, handing coach Steve Collins' squad a 74-57 setback in early December.

Sun Prairie West, coming off a nice win over Stoughton last week, dropped to 5-12 overall and 4-7 in league play with the loss to Madison Memorial. Coach Jay Swanson's young team -- four of Wednesday's five starters for the Wolfpack return next season -- plays a non-league game at Stevens Point on Friday before hosting Madison West next Tuesday.

BOXSCORE

Madison Memorial (31-38 = 69)
C.
