The second half was more of the same as a running clock was put into use with 9:00 minutes left and the Purple Knights ahead by 45. The quickness of the Beloit Memorial guards in a 2-2-1 zone press was just too much for Sun Prairie East to handle. The pressure led to numerous turnovers and breakouts for Beloit Memorial, which improved to 8-0 under coach Todd Marks with the non-league win Saturday afternoon.
Hereford is off to a fantastic start for Beloit Memorial as he is averaging a state-best 39 points per game while leading the Purple Knights to a 7-0 record. He scored with efficiency in the win over Sun Prairie East, missing just a handful of shots. Hereford swished four triples, scored in transition, scored over taller defenders in the lane and made seven-of-nine foul shots. The state's premier unsigned senior, Hereford's recruitment has picked up of late, per Beloit Memorial coach Todd Marks. Appalachian State, Boston University, Brown and Detroit Mercy have expressed recent interest to go along with previous offers from Cal Poly, Northern Illinois, South Dakota State and Western Illinois.

A quick-on-quick backcourt player who anticipates well and scores with regularity in transition, Hodges darted into passing lanes and came up with steals and layups several times for Beloit Memorial in its win over Sun Prairie East. A three-year varsity performer for the Purple Knights, Hodges scored 17 points for his squad while also giving up some good looks at the basket in order for his teammates to benefit from his passing skill. Hodges and Hereford make up one of the state's quickness and most prolific backcourt combinations.

Martin is yet another quick backcourt performer for Beloit Memorial and his presence in the Purple Knights' trapping defense creates plenty of havoc for opponents. And when the opposition turns the ball over, as Sun Prairie East did often on Saturday, Martin is more than willing to turn the miscues into quick points on the other end. Martin finished with four baskets and drew four fouls en route to scoring 11 points, the third Beloit Memorial player to finish in double-scoring figures.

Vogler was the lone Sun Prairie East player to reach double figures as the senior wing finished with 11 points. Vogler scored near the basket and also was able to use head fakes to draw fouls and earn trips to the free-throw line. He finished by making three-of-four foul shots for the Cardinals. A terrific three-sport athlete (football, basketball, baseball) for Sun Prairie East, Vogler is one of the few returning players from last year's squad.

THE BIG PICTURE

Beloit Memorial remained unbeaten with the triumph over Sun Prairie East and will take a 7-0 record into a Southern Lakes Conference outing with Elkhorn on Tuesday. A big league game looms on Thursday at Waterford, which is ranked among the better WIAA Division 2 teams in the state.

With just two seniors on its roster and a lack of varsity experience coming into the campaign, Sun Prairie East definitely is in rebuilding mode under coach Steve Maselter. The Cardinals fell to 1-9 with the loss to Beloit Memorial and the schedule doesn't lighten up at all as Sun Prairie East plays Big Eight Conference power Madison Memorial Friday before playing Greenfield in a non-league outing next Saturday.

FROM THE COACHES

From Beloit Memorial coach Todd Marks:
"Defensive pressure, especially on the perimeter, is our identity.
