USE CODE “baxley30” FOR 30% OFF THE FIRST PURCHASE OF ANY SUBSCRIPTION

The 2025 Poinsettia Classic began on Monday, December 22nd, at Greenville High School. This event featured 12 Palmetto State teams divided into three brackets of four teams each, with the champions being St. Joseph's, Eastside, and Greenville. Prep Hoops SC was in attendance for the opening round games, and these were the six best shooters on day one:

First up on my list of shooters from the Poinsettia Classic is [player_tooltip player_id='1490037' first='Brandon' last='Ray']. On paper, the Eastside Eagles have as much shooting as anyone in 5A, but they only had five made threes in Monday's win over Powdersville. Two of those came from Ray, who also did an excellent job of setting up other shooters or getting to his spots in the mid-range. Big-picture-wise, Brandon is off to an excellent scoring start to a crucial Junior Season, but what he showed as a passer (7 assists) in addition to the shooting is an encouraging sign for his long-term potential.

This was my first in-person look at Smith and the Knights this season, and they didn't disappoint. Crick had a game-high 15 points without needing to do much in the fourth quarter because of the large gap on the scoreboard. He got going early by knocking down two of his first three attempts from downtown, both coming from the top of the key and the latter off a designed elevator action. Smith is always active without the ball in his hands, relocating around the wing and making hard cuts even when he isn't the main target of the action. Crick also looked aggressive as a driver with a nice crossover and good vision to kick to his teammates.

[player_tooltip player_id='3266567' first='Chase' last='Hoover'] is a new name that I learned on day one of the 2025 Poinsettia Classic. He had a terrific shooting day, going for 16 points on 4-10 3FG. Hoover is the best shooter on the Tiger Roster and is the guy whom they target on set plays. He helped bring the Tigers close at the end of the first half with a catch and shoot left-corner three and a contested left-wing three off a sidelines pass. Despite being an excellent shooter from distance, Chase does have some room for growth as a finisher because he is smaller in frame. That addition would make his game more complete, turning him from a spot-up shooter to a guy who can positively affect the game even when his shots aren't falling.

The best shooting prospect in South Carolina's 2026 Class is [player_tooltip player_id='1486213' first='BJ' last='Brown']. In Sumter's high-level matchup with Riverside at the Poinsettia Classic, BJ flashed that potential with 38 points on 5-8 3FG. What makes Brown special is the variety of ways he can hit threes: self-created, spot-up, or even movement shots off actions. He got to 38 points because of how effectively he was using his size to play through contact and finish near the rim or get to the free-throw line, but the only negative thing you can say about BJ's performance was that he wasn't as efficient at the line as you would hope from a guy of his caliber.

Davinroy was on the losing end of Oceanside's matchup with Legacy, but he is a guy who should be on college radars as his senior season winds down. Abe is one of the premier spot-up shooters in the [program_tooltip program_id='2078736' first='Lowcountry' last=''], and he knocked down four threes on 10 attempts in their first game of the week. He is comfortable knocking down threes all over the floor from the corners, to the wings, to even at the top of the key when he is running the offense. Keep an eye on Davinroy to be one of the state leaders in three-point shooting over the next few months.

Rounding out my list of shooters at the Poinsettia Classic is [player_tooltip player_id='2977956' first='Kent' last='Kirkpatrick']. Kirkpatrick and the hosts played in Monday's final game, knocking off cross-town rival Southside 80-56. Both of his made threes were created by drive-and-kicks, and they are looks that will be there all season because of how talented some of his teammates are. Kent was also fouled on a three-point attempt. One thing that sets him apart from some of the others on this list is his athleticism. Kirkpatrick can get up unlike many other 2 guards in his tier, so look out when he sets his eyes on the rim. Kent finished with 19 points on 2-5 3FG in the big win.
