Wednesday Film Review: St. Joseph's vs Travelers Rest

This week's game is non-region game between St. Joseph's and Travelers Rest, with St. Joseph's winning 46-33 after an impressive second half.   <hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity" />    The size and activity of [player_tooltip player_id='1711395' first='Carter' last='Bears'] was a handful for Travelers Rest throughout St. Joseph's 46-33 win on Tuesday. He posted a dominant 18-point, 13-rebound double-double in the contest, proving to be a threat after every missed shot on the offensive end while preventing second chances on the defensive end. Most of Carter's points came from the offensive glass, but he did take up good positions in the dunker spot, use his size to be an effective screener, and run the floor for easy looks in transition.     Crick was due for a regression spot after hitting a school-record 8 3s the last time out, but he was still an important piece in the offense without knocking down an outside shot in this one. Smith looked much more confident handling the ball, both in attempting to get shots off the dribble and in trying to set his teammates up. Each of his two field goals came at the rim, one being a leak-out transition layup, and the other a running floater after being driven off the three-point line.     There was no doubt that [player_tooltip player_id='2872903' first='Deux' last='Greene'] was going to be the lead guard for this St. Joseph's team from day one. He looked like he was playing at a different speed compared to the competition at times, which is something rare for a Freshman Point Guard. Deux had an impressive balance of scoring and facilitating in the win over Travelers Rest, putting up 15 points and 6 assists. Not only can he turn the corner and get into the lane off pick-and-roll looks, but Greene is also a capable jump shooter off the dribble and the catch when his feet are set. He will even apply frequent ball pressure past the timeline, making him a true all-around player for this group.     On the flip side, I was also impressed with some of the things Headley did from the Point Guard position for the Devildogs. He is your typical small, scrappy guard who can hit threes and mix it up on both ends of the floor. It felt like Phiilip was able to punish the Knights whenever they had a lapse on the defensive end with two open threes, as well as a couple of forced turnovers from lazy ball-handling. Headley could've been counted on a little bit more in the second half, particularly as Travelers Rest went through a 9+ minute scoring drought, but give credit to St. Joseph's for playing tough defense during that stretch.     Caden Johnston was a huge reason why Travelers Rest was able to build up a lead early in the first half of Tuesday's affair. He knocked down four first-half threes, displaying a nice feel for the spacing of the offense as well as excellent off-ball movement to get through actions. Johnston has a smooth, quick release that will allow him to be a productive shooter throughout the season for the Devildogs. Caden could be boosted by a little bit more work in the weight room, particularly when it comes to his strength on drives. He finished with 17 points and 7 rebounds in the loss.
